Ireland Garda: keeping the weather in line

Weather Words in Irish display posters for class walls!

 translating English to Irish

Winter is a real force to deal with in any country.  For some reason, the Irish are themselves a force of nature.

Ireland is wet, a given. But winter wet? Oh, yes.

Summer? Is it dry? Is it hot? Is it raining?

Ireland is an island that is surrounded by ocean, wind, and rain. Morning could be gray, midday is sunshine, and evening is a pouring rain. Or, it could be all rain, or maybe just clouds.  Or it could be rain that lasts for days...

If you want to know some Gaelic, there are many sites to access. It is a hard language to learn, let me tell you that.

When in doubt just say, "sin Éire duitse (that's Irish for you).

 This is more like it.

Hot? You don't KNOW hot.

It is July 28 and the day will be roasting hot by noon.

Temperatures of our area may reach 108 deg. today.

Just when the inside feels like I could bake cookies on the
counter, a magical thing happened.

Off, with the interior thermometer rising slowly up the scale.
82º?  That is nothing.  86º, and it keeps rising.
                                   I stop looking.

Outside?  Thermometer past 95 and still going...A nice
lady fixed it. She was so kind.

The A/C returned.  Thank you, God.

Truth is: Summer makes me cranky.  Life sucks. Leave me alone. It doesn't matter; hot one year or the other doesn't matter

How hot is it?

All is at Peace

Butterfly on Lavender Flower
Everything lavender

The sun filtered through the garden, breaking through the dense foliage.  The twining squash vines sported hearty zucchini, which  would soon muscle its way through other vegetables.

Butterflies were dancing over the blooming lavender and dahlias.  Over in the corner, isolated from the serene garden, were two gooseberry bushes.  Brooding and sour, they knew it was only a matter of time before they would be picked and treasured.

But, for now, all is at peace.

The italicized words come from Wednesday Words from Delores some time ago. These  were supplied 5 + years ago, when Delores had started W. Words as a way to encourage writers to expand genres. The goal was to integrate these words with their own style.

Current words can be found on Wednesday at Elephant's Child blog site.

This is a challenge I savor. Brevity, saying much with chosen words (about 65 words above), is powerful in its conciseness. Writing, with those few meaningful words that convey an image, well, that is just plain fun.

Measure of a Great Summer

Summer is just starting.  Soon fireworks will burst in the sky and "ahhhh...ooohhh" will drift upwards.

Summer is measured in so many ways.  Not by time or clocks or calendars, but by all things intangible is summer measured.

Summer is measured by:

* amount of fireflies caught and held in a quart jar.

Summer....Watching fireflies/lightning bugs...I have only ever seen them once. It was amazing.:

* first good ear of sweet corn covered with butter.

* wrinkled fingers of my grandchildren after swimming all day.

* by splashes in the pool by children of all ages.

*  number of the SPF in the sunblock lotion.

* by how high the A/C is set.

* by lack of football games on TV.

* by sales of summer clothes at JCPenney.

Can you add to the list?  I wonder how many measurements our blogging community can add?

What would you do??

Source

Stretched out on the bed, ******* wondered if life could get much more boring than this.

Anything…almost anything…would be better than this.

Every last vegetable in the garden that could be canned had been canned. In fact, the garden was a pile of pulled weeds. Yard was mowed.  Siding washed down.  Fence wire repaired.

The hogs were wearing down in the heat.  Which is why ***** was at home: to spray water over the hogs to cool them down.

The slightest sound brought **** almost to the point of throwing furniture down the stairs or ripping down the laundry line.

Is this what it feels to be insane, to lose my mind?

The parents were at a church committee meeting.  The older brothers had taken the truck to somewhere.

That point seemed rather vague.

Lightening blew out the transformer yesterday, taking all the electricity with it.  No TV.   No one to phone.  No radio.   Nothing.

What do you think a bored teen (boy or girl) would do in this situation??  What would you do?

Summer Sizzles

As the Western United States continues to fry under the sun and burn in multiple sites throughout, this is all that can be said.
