Changes....from one world to another

We had returned to California after living in green green Ireland. When we moved here to sunny San Diego County, we chose a city that was more rural than city.   With cows grazing in fields, orange groves, and huge gardens that sold produce in road-side stands, we loved it.  The hills around us were covered with rocky outcrops with patches of manzanita and sage.

While not as green as Ireland, it was a joy to see fields with life.

What a pleasure to be outside!  Wind from the west sent the smell of cows (and manure) our way. The north wind gave us eucalyptus.  From the south came the sweet citrus orange blossoms.  The eastern winds from San Jacinto Mountains and deserts gave me a migraine.

That was nearly 25 years ago, and life in California changes at a rapid pace.

On the hills we now see expensive homes with a superior view.  The rocks are still there, but for how long?  Until another housing developer blasts them away?

The cows grazed on mighty expensive land, it turned out.  Those lovely black and white cows were moved out and a new high school moved in with parking lots.

The brittle eucalyptus trees grow at an alarming rate.  We had four and had to remove them; they were a danger to houses around us.  Brought here by Spanish padres from Australia, those trees took over the state.  Not a source of lumber since the trees shattered and burned easily, the trees are being removed.

Orange groves once covered large parts of southern California.  Once a heavenly-scented place to live, the groves are gone with houses in their place.  The grove to the south of us sat for years on a big corner lot.  Ignored, oranges dropped and rotted on the ground.  Without water, the trees were gnarled dwarfs.

Yesterday, on a drive to the store in that area, I was shocked to see the trees bulldozed into a pile in the middle.  The lot was valuable and had been sold.

So, the only thing that remains is the Santa Ana wind from the east.

That, unfortunately, will always blow through my head, giving me a migraine.

War in France, 1915

The last time Hannah saw Gerald was the day he rode the train out with hundreds, maybe thousands, of boys in uniform.  Fight the Great War…Be home by Christmas! Hannah blew kisses and waved as if her arm needed to go with him.

All the other new brides gathered at the church hall to roll bandages and pack toiletries.  Murmurs echoed across, up, and down from the vaulted ceiling.

“Why, my Joe said that Paris is grand, and some day he will take me there!  He writes to me every day, you know.”  Melissa wrapped bandages, her eyes lost in dreams.  Long white strips draped over her rounded belly.

In the circle of young brides. Hannah was alone with a flat belly. Letters from Gerald came every day, but were grim and spotted with mud.  His words she would not share with the round-belly brides.  They needed their dreams, while Hannah needed truth.

Christmas came and left, church bells rung and carols sung. Then another Christmas slipped by unnoticed.

Brides, now weathered lonely wives, still met at the hall.  While toddlers chased around, mothers wrapped and wrapped rolls of white cotton.  The young faces once wreathed with smiles now reflected strain of another year gone by.

Letters grew fewer and all waited for the one letter they did not want to receive.

Then the boys came home.

They were other men who left legs and arms behind; some remained, buried in graves in France, near the ocean.  Boys now men-- some shivered at every loud sound, while others were stoic, with distant haunted eyes.

Gerald held Hannah gently.  “It was awful, never seen anything like it.”  Hannah settled her face into the fragrance of Gerald’s wool uniform.

She whispered into the wool.  “I knew you would come home, just knew it.  And, I will never let go of you.”

Ever.

World War 1 is the often-forgotten war.  Its veterans are now gone.  Honor them.

Wed. Words: Pre-Christmas in Harrod's.

 England-London

 A legendary London store

It was a pre-Christmas shopping sale day at Harrod’s.  It might be hard to imagine, but the lifts were heavily packed with residents from with their presents. I noticed that English people murmur apologies, tourists do not. Elbows dug into my ribs, and I swore the entire population of London was in the lift with me.

Famous elevator from 1940s

I was hoping for some support from the doorman, but he was hiding somewhere.  I had saved 6 months’ salary to visit London during the Christmas season but regretted it now.  A flood of shoppers drove me along through the door and I stumbled the first five steps.  On the verge of making a face plant, I heard the Yank tourist mock me, gaining irritation in the English swarm. Then he laughed.

As I hit the sidewalk with a bloody nose crunch, I felt a hand pull me up and whisper to me. “Those Yanks. Wish someone would give them a comeuppance.”

With that I was on my feet, I grabbed the shoulder of the American tourist, flipped him around and wiped my bloody nose on his shirt. Then I dredged up and cut loose with every profane swear word I knew. Never being one who said more than a “damn” of “shite”, I had a vocabulary from memories of my brothers.

The swarm froze and then clapped.  We all moved on, but I kept pace with the bloody tourist. Well done, well done, they murmured.

The underlined and italicized words are from the infamous Wed. Words, started back a decade or so by a delightful blogger, Delores from Under the Porch Light.  She is no longer active in blogging, so the baton has been passed ontoRiver  and Elephant's Child. Please go and check them out! They were easy on us this week.

The Darkest Hour.....

plat2
Ode to a Platitude

Karen growled and muttered an assortment of foul words in her car, driving over speed limit.  Her visit to Mom and Grandma had not provided the affirmation and comfort she had hoped it would.

Bill had packed up his stuff in the night and was gone before she woke up.  Note:  I’m outta here, bitch…and the last word was written in bold letters. Now, Karen needed to share her pain.

She had been in Mom’s kitchen, sipping on peach herbal tea.  Mom was kneading bread, taking loaf after loaf from the oven.  These would go to the homeless shelter.  Grandma was sitting quietly while knitting baby blankets for preemies at the local hospital.

Karen had been trying tell of her woes and ask for advice when the litany began.

“You know, honey, the darkest hour is just before the dawn. You’ll do fine.” This one came from Mom.

Such is life,” Grandma added. “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!” She dropped a stitch, but caught it time.

Mouth open, Karen had looked from one face to the other, listening with disbelief.

“Yes, sweetie. God has a plan for you…you just don’t know it yet!...and then…It is what it isTime heals all wounds…Life doesn’t give you things you can’t handle…It could be worse…It wasn’t meant to be…There are plenty more fish in the sea…Everything happens for a reason..

When Karen’s grandma said “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen”…

Karen had leaped to her feet and raced to her car.  She skidded out the driveway, narrowly missed the mailbox.  This found her flying along the freeway with profanity tailing after her.  Her thoughts were not kind.  If she ever heard one more mindless platitude, she would vomit.

'I eliminated all the platitudes and cliche statements, from your mission statement, and I'm left with this blank sheet of paper.'

Many thanks to Delores, who created this idea.  This is a re-post from 2014. I hear and read those cursed words, attempting to put it altogether into something cohesive.

Life in the Fast Lane

May be an image of 2 people, car and text

My hometowns of Pittsfield and Nebo have a parade of vintage cars every year.

those were the days my friend.

Life in the fast lane

Gone in 60 seconds

Run that Race, CARS 3

It is not so much that I love cars. It is that I love the competition of driver to driver. I love the history tied to each car.  Each movie has its own theme song and leading men.  The theme songs are more rap than I like, but it drives the story.

Pittsfield, Illinois, is the county seat of Pike County. The courthouse is in the square. Lincoln and Douglas held a debate on the steps of the south side.

For many years, this was the only stop light in town.
Now there are 3 stop lights.

If you're from the South

If you are from the South, or live near the South, or emigrated from the South, or wish you lived in the South, then this word will have you nodding,"Yes.  Yes, of course."

This is the way I like grits.

I did not enter the delicious world of grits until I was an adult.  My parents knew all about grits, had been eating them for years, but somehow they never put them on the table.

It was shortly after having an abscess in the lower back molar with a major bad root canal, that I discovered grits. After such a massively painful event, the only foods I could eat had the texture of baby food.  Mashed potatoes were acceptable.

That was when my mother fixed me some grits.  She put a sizable glop of real butter on it, poured a bit cream, and a swirl of maple syrup.  Grits, glorious grits!

**Some Southerners may prefer their grits with bacon and eggs, but I like the sweet better.  This is from Bite and Booze, Jay D. Ducote.

For any readers who have experienced similar dental experiences, I offer my sympathy.  If I were at your house, I would mix up some grits for us both.

Grits can be purchased at any reputable grocery store, next to the oatmeal.

If you live in Louisiana, please go there and write about it.

Goin' fishin'

I was pregnant with our firstborn when Jaws was released, 1975.  We were at a drive-in close to the Pacific Ocean when a dense fog rolled in. It settled close to the ground, but up to our windows.  The Jaws theme song took on new meaning.

My brothers and I went fishing in the creeks near our farm. I wasn't all that successful, but the memories are good. That is, if you don't count mosquitoes.

Never ever had the joy these children experienced in their fishing. To be the parents of these sweet babies and to watch them make their catch?  That would be awesome.

NFL near sighted

Student Money College Clip Art - College Money Clipart Transparent, HD Png Download ...

Money for college?

Getting a summer job between school years was life blood of the next school year: No job, no money, no school.

No photo description available.
One job I held for two summers in a row was working as an intern for Farmers Home Administration. The first day was a normal, meet and greet thing, until the assistant administrator came from his office. The man filled up the door frame, hair just brushing the head jam, shoulders brushing the side frames.

Bob Robertson is a big man in his leadership and sense of community, retired pro-football player, a hometown farm boy, and he is a giant. Bob sent this article to others like me, and I am posting it here:

John 3:16

Some Folks Have Come to Despise the NFL...

For fans who follow the sport, most of this will be a simple reminder of things you already know. For the rest, it's a wake-up call:

In 2012 the NFL had an issue with Tim Tebow kneeling before each game to pray, they also had an issue with Tebow wearing John 3:16 as part of his eye-black to avoid glare, and made him take it off.

In 2013 the NFL fined Brandon Marshall for wearing green cleats to raise awareness for people with mental health disorders.

In 2014 Robert Griffin III (RG3) entered a post-game press conference wearing a shirt that said "Know Jesus Know Peace" but was forced to turn it inside out by an NFL uniform inspector before speaking at the podium.

In 2015 DeAngelo Williams was fined for wearing "Find the Cure "eye black for breast cancer awareness.

In 2015 William Gay was fined for wearing purple cleats to raise awareness for domestic violence. (Not that the NFL has a domestic violence problem..).

In 2016 the NFL prevented the Dallas Cowboys from wearing a decal on their helmet in honor of 5 Dallas Police officers killed in the line of duty.

In 2016 the NFL threatened to fine players who wanted to wear cleats to commemorate the 15th anniversary of 9/11.

So tell me again how the NFL supports free speech and expression. It seems quite clear based on these facts that the NFL has taken a position against any action by NFL players demonstrating RESPECT for any issue:

God, social causes such as mental health, cancer, domestic violence, for cops killed arbitrarily, for being cops, or for the Memory of 9/11...
BUT they will allow demonstrations of DISRESPECT for our National Flag, our National Anthem, for America, and for the American People, if it will help mollify a particular Group and its supporters.

That is who and what the NFL now has shown itself to be.

It takes big men who stand up for their country, and bow in prayer to God. Bob Robertson is one of those big men with a big heart for his beliefs.

When I think about NFL, I think about the best commercials ever.  I love Peyton Manning. There are some players who hold themselves to a higher standard. The teams and players from the post above are those people.
