Changes....from one world to another

We had returned to California after living in green green Ireland. When we moved here to sunny San Diego County, we chose a city that was more rural than city.   With cows grazing in fields, orange groves, and huge gardens that sold produce in road-side stands, we loved it.  The hills around us were covered with rocky outcrops with patches of manzanita and sage.

While not as green as Ireland, it was a joy to see fields with life.

What a pleasure to be outside!  Wind from the west sent the smell of cows (and manure) our way. The north wind gave us eucalyptus.  From the south came the sweet citrus orange blossoms.  The eastern winds from San Jacinto Mountains and deserts gave me a migraine.

That was nearly 25 years ago, and life in California changes at a rapid pace.

On the hills we now see expensive homes with a superior view.  The rocks are still there, but for how long?  Until another housing developer blasts them away?

The cows grazed on mighty expensive land, it turned out.  Those lovely black and white cows were moved out and a new high school moved in with parking lots.

The brittle eucalyptus trees grow at an alarming rate.  We had four and had to remove them; they were a danger to houses around us.  Brought here by Spanish padres from Australia, those trees took over the state.  Not a source of lumber since the trees shattered and burned easily, the trees are being removed.

Orange groves once covered large parts of southern California.  Once a heavenly-scented place to live, the groves are gone with houses in their place.  The grove to the south of us sat for years on a big corner lot.  Ignored, oranges dropped and rotted on the ground.  Without water, the trees were gnarled dwarfs.

Yesterday, on a drive to the store in that area, I was shocked to see the trees bulldozed into a pile in the middle.  The lot was valuable and had been sold.

So, the only thing that remains is the Santa Ana wind from the east.

That, unfortunately, will always blow through my head, giving me a migraine.

Nothing ever stays the same.

When we moved here to sunny desert San Diego County from lush green rainy Ireland, we chose a city that was more rural than city.   With cows grazing in fields, orange groves, and huge gardens that sold produce in road-side stands, we loved it.  The hills around us were covered with rocky outcrops with patches of manzanita and sage.

What a pleasure to be outside, whereas Ireland wasn't really a walk-about with rain.

These were  boulders on a hill near our then house. We claimed them as our own.

Not a source of lumber since the trees shattered and burned easily, the trees are being removed which is a good thing.

So, the only thing that remains is the Santa Ana wind from the east. Right now, these winds are fanning the fire around Los Angeles.

These, unfortunately, will always blow through my head, giving me a migraine.

Dementia is a thief.

Cancer Control Month purple colour ribbon image, awareness day concept image

                             Dementia

Let the words from my mouth and the meditations of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. Psalms 19: 13

My father had developed dementia.  He had always been strange throughout his fatherhood, but it was developing into a real dive.

I lived 2800 miles from them, came home every 2 or 3 months but I didn't how much it had progressed.

When I came home one time, Dad was unpredictable.  He told us that we wouldn't inherit any thing.  If we wanted to obtain them, Dad said that we would have to come to the auction and bid on them like everyone else.  Yup.

I saw many other elements of dementia in my visit, and could see how worn out Mom was.

I didn't return to visit until Dad was in his bed, with hospice visiting daily. NO ONE of the hospice provided any in home assistance. My frail mother bathed, changed bedding and diapers all on her own. When I called Mom, she was tearful and relieved when I said I would be there the next day.

Nothing else I want to say.  Dementia took everything away from him, and Mom. And dementia took Dad from us.

Changes in the Wind

Edith had stared
Out her window
For nearly 50 years.

Edith had watched
Weather changes,
Children playing,
Family picnics.

Today, fields
Were silent.
Her house was silent.
Edith herself was silent.

Last mourners had closed the door.

The parlor was overpowered with
The scent of roses and carnations.

The table held remnants of
Sandwiches and pie.

Edith did what she always did:
She cleaned up.

Now she stood at the kitchen window.
What to do? What to do, now?

Edith carried her suitcases
To the car,
Locked the house.
And left.

To where?
She did not know.

Everyone, at one time or another, looks at the empty house and winding road. Sometimes they close the door and start the car.  Sometimes the doors and cars remain silent, and sometimes the suitcase goes back in. Have you ever been there? I have.

Gravity is not my friend.

11 Wedding Cake Disasters | CHWV

I have nooo idea where I found this. A few years ago, I shrugged it off. Now?

I found a hair there under my chin,
And I yanked that sucker out,
But wouldn't you know, the very  next day,
Two more began to sprout.
I don't know what's happening;
It's a perplexing change of pace,
My arms and legs are going bald,
But I've gotta shave my face.

It's such a rotten travesty;
My tummy once was flat.
But now my hourglass is mostly ass,
And my waist has turned to fat.
My body's slowly sagging,
And I don't look so hot;
If a man wants to ogle my bosom now,
I'm afraid he'll have to squat.

But that's okay, 'cause I'm still here,
Of life I'm still a part.
So what if when I bend or stretch,
I leak a little fart?
I've lots of life and love in store,
Though I'm not young and shiny;
If ya wanta know the truth,
Old age can kiss my heinie.

Hopefully this will not offend those who read this.  While it is aimed straight to females, I am absolutely positive a male can nod with understanding. Perhaps he could write a male version of this?

With all luck, use of this poem will not violate some copyright or what-not.

Infinite Jest--Time will find us

Video Tape to DVD
From one media to another
Times change, without a doubt.  As technology made photographs more accessible and cheap, almost every family documented big events.  Burgeoning photo albums showed the styles of the 1960s and the 1970s.  Silly hair styles and mini-skirts were part of the albums.

Movie cameras shrank from complicated monsters with four blinding headlights to hand-held quiet 8mm cameras, capturing the silliness of my era.

We were the hippy generation, the postwar baby boomers.  Long straight hair and ‘hot pants’ were the style; leisure suits were dressing up.  We documented our life together with photo and film.

Hot babe
At Christmas 2012, I arranged to transfer a big box of 8 mm film to DVD, with my narration and background music.

From our early marriage days, through our children era, and then to the mid 90s, I soon found myself smiling big and a little teary.  I don’t know what reaction I expected from our now adult kids. Oh, Mom! These are so great! Thank you so much!

Because we were diligent in recording our history and obsessive about keeping those films, we have a new position in the minds of our grown children:

We are their source of INFINITE JEST.

What we did get were peals of laughter, OMG-dad-you-were-such-a-geek, and LOL-mom-you-were-so-hot.

Our grandchildren will have hours of diversion and entertainment with our visual legacy to our progeny.

Hours and hours of infinite jest. Yes, our legacy is digital.

Age of Not Believing

I've never let anyone talk me into not believing in myself. Muhammad Ali Quotes
Quotes
Rush in hopeless circles
Searching for truth,

At the age of not believing
Make-believe is gone.

Set aside heroes,
Put imagination on a shelf.

All has become an

Age of not believing,
And self doubting.

 A Castaway
No one hears.

A barren isle
On a lonely sea.

Where are endings with smiles?

Where did those dreams go ?

Face
The age of not believing.

Face
All that was ever known.

Start believing.

Something
Marvelous can be true.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a favorite of my family and I still love it.

History of...what?

source
History books from the 1950s and 60s were thick, really thick.  History of the world affected every nation, making knowledge vital to the next generations. From Julius Caesar to Jesus Christ to …. Every huge event was an essential domino.

That made History granite, words carved in marble, embellished with gold…immutable.

Now, as an adult, I am viewing history in a different light:  potter’s clay.

History is ever changing.  An archaeologist's dig in Italy reveals the ancient worship of deities and everyday lives.  Another dig in Montana discovers layers in stone, showing what happened that killed the dinosaurs followed by great volcanic deposits.

Archeologists have been left scratching their heads
source
Another Planet? Apparently Pluto may be forgiven, while a ninth planet has been discovered.  The Universe is expanding, which is contrary to Einstein's view that it will shrink.

Genomes?  DNA manipulation?  None of this was part of history until recent years.

One wonders: with all these new world events, what will be discovered beneath layers and layers we leave behind, in a dig buried below time, hidden in rock?

Everything we thought we knew changes; new discoveries aborts old reasoning and shapes the lump of clay in a different direction.

WedWords: Ultimately

Big Fish
Add caption
Don had always been a big fish in a small pond.  As a respected and experienced builder, Don employed most of the men in the community, holding many contracts for town, school, and church boards.

His now-grown children had attended school in the town. Don and Lena went to the local Methodist church, and Don was active city council meetings.  Life was good.

His wife Lena experienced an inexplicable fall during the church bazaar, dropping a plate full of cupcakes.  The local GP, Dr. Bill Nelson, referred her to the University Hospital, where Lena and Don learned she had Stage 4 brain cancer.

Ultimately, Don and Lena moved to be close to the Cancer Treatment Center in Arizona.

From the back yard of their new home, Don stared across the desert at the glorious sunset.  The land line connecting him to his life now lay in a hospital bed, hooked up to monitors. Oh, Lena…. He sighed and returned to his empty house.

My brother Robert lived in our small town and life changed for all when he was diagnosed with brain cancer.  That feeling of emptiness comes through in this short story.

I really don't know who supplied this week's words and they are excellent!  Starting this month, Elephant's Child will providing words until the beginning of November when Delores at Under the Porch Light will take over.  Phew, I hope I have that right!

Things happen

Things happen.  Things happen quickly.

In one second, a fraction of second,

one’s world changes,

 turns over.

Maybe it is a fall.  Or, maybe it is abrupt darkness or

pain,

But then, things happen.

It Is Time

These are not my boxes--can you imagine if?

Sorting through boxes leads to glimpses back to the past.  It still amazes me to see those glimpses and then to remember when they were important.

Teaching was my profession for two decades leaving me with boxes and boxes of that life stacked on sturdy shelves.  I can open my garage door and look at those boxes, see the labels, and think “Do I still have that?”, and then “Why do I still have that?”

We are contemplating moving—more just contemplating.  Kids are grown and gone.  Their belongings have moved with them, with a few exceptions.

With that, I know I must take a deep breath, gird the loins, and face down the lion, which are those boxes.

It is time.

Behold: The Letter A

Dice with letter A: Character on the cube
www.12frames.eu
Let's start the very beginning...
The Letter "A"

The letter "A" sets off this day, April 1st.  It is hard to be so creative at the starting line, wondering if brilliance will somehow kick-in by the time we get to "H".  Oh well.

"A" starts probably the most important word at this stage of my life and the history throughout a nation's existence:

Amendment

The dictionary definition writes that an amendment is a change or addition to a law or a bill.

The Constitution of the United States has come under attack, with branches of our government trying to erase or at least smudge the lines separating the powers of branch.

For a gardener, an amendment is a mulch and soil addition to existing soil to enrich the existing soil in order for it to successfully grow plants.

Soil amendment = an addition to the a law or bill?  Don't know.

See you soon? ?!

Hope all this seriousness does not impede your searches!  Now, off you go, then.
