The only live performance of her singing is from 1959. It was grainy and difficult to follow.
Joan Baez has had an
amazing career. Her voice—that incredible
soprano voice—rang out as a voice of our generation. There are too many roads to take down this
topic, the wide genre of her songs.
Instead, the one song that rings clearest in my memory is “Black is the
color…”
A question niggles in
my brain: What is it about the color
black that pervades the design world?
Why are TV remotes
black? Is it possible that Sony or
RCA want us to lose the remotes in the dark recesses of sofa cushions knowing
that the black remotes will remain hidden?
Why are many purse
linings black, or nearly black? Is it possible that, by making the
linings dark, little items (nail clippers, lipstick, lip-gloss) will disappear,
thus requiring further purchases?
Why do fancy dress
events involve black/dark suits and dresses?
The ‘little black dress’: Why is it the important dress in the
closet? 
For that matter, why do members
of the Clergy wear black cassocks, black suits, black nun habits, etc.? Why?
In the beginning two questions, the color black perhaps denotes dignity and
stylishness. In the last question, maybe the
color black indicates a desire to shed worldly attachments. Just guessing here...
Teenagers seem to
go through an ‘all-black-Goth’ stage.
Black hair, black clothing, coal-black eye make-up—this is supposed to
shout out to the world that they are individuals making a statement.
Oddly, when they are all together, they appear
to be wearing uniforms.
Spies,
burglars,
movie villains, and Harry Potter characters all are dressed in black.
The Adams family—stylish black clothing. Matrix—really cool black
clothing.
Enough of this rant.

I wrote this in 2013, and came across it recently. Why, I don't know. The underlined words are from Wednesday words challenge that I fitted into this homage to black, and to Joan Baez.
Now that is a question that I have no idea what the answer is:) Have a grand weekend.

DeleteI think remotes are black so the coloured buttons are more easily seen, ditto purse linings, so colourful little things are easily spotted within. I have never lost a remote in couch cushions or anywhere else, I always have it on the side table next to my chair.

ReplyDeleteit is apparently a folk song from Scotland and moved onto Appalachian area of Kentucky. so it is an old song, two centuries old. I just looked that up, which I should have done earlier.
DeletePerhaps it conveys seriousness? An interesting topic, and in some cultures, it wouldn't even come up. For example, I believe Buddhist monks and nuns (whatever they are termed) wear red.
ReplyDeleteI don't know...it just scoured to me when I was looking at my husband's hair. stay with me on this...he has glorious head of hair, now gray. But when we were newly in love, he had such ahead of black/dark hair. So that might be it.

I also have most of my clothes (jeans, tees, shoes) are black. It makes choosing clothes for the day easier.

DeleteMy natural hair color is black like my mom's was. Now it's more medium brown with highlights that come from my hair dresser. If I didn't do that it would be the opposite! One of these days that will happen! My husband calls my purse "The black hole" that he just hands to me to find whatever I need from it!
ReplyDeleteMy hair was always a dark brown, nice and full. Then gray started to take over. I let it go for a while until my 5 yr. old gr-daughters told me that I was old when I was old 55. So the gray is gone and dark brown is back, but my hair person told me the color is brown sable.
Deletei don't know why but i have felt always that black color has special attraction for me in the world . even though in my early age i never wore black because it was considered sad color for unmarried but i wore many after marriage because i never believed in this mindset .in our area people wore white when someone died ,so what is the point cursing black.
