| Honesty |
We have two
delightful grand-daughters. Only
eighteen months apart, they are both friends and sisters. They are so very
different from each other.
"Red Queen" is
studious and an awful liar who always confesses. "Alice" is a butterfly and an unrepentant liar.
That is why this event tickled and surprised us. We had picked the girls up from school and
were driving to their house.
“Grandpa,
you’d better move this big folder here…Why,
honey?.
“Well, if
you don’t, I’ll look at it and it’ll distract me, and then”….Then what?
“Then I’ll
pick it up, and then I’ll open it, and then…Alice,
why are you crying?
“I’ll open
it up, I’ll take out the papers,
I’ll fold them and tear them…” Sweet baby…
She sobbed
more. ”When we get out of the car, you’ll
ask me if I played with your papers, and I’ll say No I Didn’t, and then you
will say Tell The Truth, and then I’ll say I Am Telling The Truth…”
By the time
we walked into the house, Alice was in fully crying mode. “I’ll go to my room…” She stomped up the stairs and we heard the
door slam.
The folder
was intact in the car, with sobs echoing down upon it.

She knows her weaknesses.

DeleteHow lovely, so very true. When I saw h for honesty, I thought of the honesty my Nana used to grown in her cottage garden. Memories...

DeleteThey are pretty, and one is usually innocent and the other has to be focused. So in a sense you are correct. No apologies needed.

DeletePoor Alice. Both approaches can be traumatic - and are infinitely better than my youngest brother who early learnt the art of telling the truth so it sounded like a lie. He got called on it a few times, was found to be telling the truth and subsequently used the technique to get away with rather a lot. And more than forty years later still does it.

DeleteYou better watch the door slammers. One of my daughters did the same thing....Stomped up the stairs and slammed the door and if she thought we didn't hear, she open the door and slam it again. Well today, the's still troble. Hahahah

ReplyDeleteShe has it all worked out. I use my "teacher eyes" on her when she heads down that road.
DeleteChildren do listen to us. Funny how they know what will get them in trouble, but they still have the impulse. This story is so sweet! She lived out the whole scenario without actually having done the crime. They are the CUTEST picture!

It's good that she works all this out for herself, including being sent to her room. Takes the load off the parents. She'll grow out of that eventually.

ReplyDeleteOh, my ears and whiskers! Reminds me of the time my grandmother was driving, telling the story of the Billy Goats Gruff, quite dramatically, and had me convinced a troll got her. She had to stop the car on the road, get out and run around it, knock on my window to "let her in" and resume driving before I stopped crying hysterically. :) I fear your Alice has a great future, perhaps as a writer and storyteller, herself?
