People of God

Life in a farming community was a great world to be and grow. The world was somewhere out there, with the Martin Luther King, Jr. , Pope John, Janis Joplin and other people whose lives and mine would never intersect.

There is a hidden group that has been persecuted for 2 millennia, the God's people, the Jewish people. Six million gone in a matter of a few years, there is little sympathy for a people that escaped genocide.

But there is no reason to dig this up.  They went on their own choice. Get over it.  These are part of the language that puts the Jewish people down more.

Just who are the famous Jewish people?  Maybe You will be surprised.

Chris Pine        Robert Downey, Jr.    Adam Lambert    Scarlet Johannson    Jack Black

Gene Simmons   Andrew Garfield   Steven Seagal    Paul Simon   Art Garfunkel  Joaquin Phoenix

Zac Efron     Natalie Portman    Paula Abdul   Jake Gyllenhal     Sylvester Stallone     Bob Dylan

So many talented Jewish people went to the entertainment and music. But why to entertainment?

Jews were prohibited for working in the community from One Millennia to another to our current age.  Instead they were allowed to work in entertaining at fair.  They emigrated to America, where the Hollywood industry was picking up.  Jewish actors were hired above other actors. After all, they had spent 2,000 years practicing their skills as a way of surviving.

Many of the producers and directors (Steven Spielberg) were part of the Jewish people talent repository made necessary by the rest of the world.

What talent came from and immigration to America! We are blessed to be part of their lives.

What to do while waiting for the doctor

Hospital wards: A nurse sweeps the floor of a ward at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington

You are waiting in a Dr.'s consulting room, surrounded by posters of body parts. There are interesting brochures about diabetes, prostrate exams, and flu shots. Generic muted watercolor paintings hang somewhere.  Candy Crush is delightful. Time will pass.

Oh, but find yourself in a specialist's room.

My last appointment with my neurologist showed me a huge difference..  Gray-ish walls in a barren room, with no visual stimulation at all, suffocation drops heavily.  No cell phone usage, either.  Too many electronic machines, absolutely important machines.  No clock, time will seize up.

There is an implicit message: Do Not Touch. Interesting canisters, holding interesting stuff, cabinets are locked: Do not touch.

These are activities I have used:

Tap dancing, sit on that plastic chair and make your feet fly.  Fix a song in your head and have at it.  Tusk from the album, Tusk by Fleetwood Mac is a favorite. Be original. Go with  it.

Make sure to not touch any paper covered space on that rolling cart, staff gets ready pissy about that. Instead, roll that cart (which is holding a few instruments) around the room.  Slowly, of course, but you could make several passes in five minutes. Don't touch the paper.

That rolling stool?  That thing is fast, amazingly fast. It swivels rapidly, so you have to be careful with that one.  Be sure to lift your feet up, so you don’t get tangled up with the rollers. Don't touch any paper, even casually .

Pretend to use that grey and hard table to play an imaginary drumAvoid the paper.  This is good for arm muscles.  Be sure to drum with convincing force.

Search for studs in the wall.  Odd, but trying to hang pictures in plaster board often leaves a row of nail holes. Stud finding is an art. There is no danger of paper-touching.

I can’t think of anything else, as the doctor entered gray prison room when I was still checking for studs.  I had found one possible stud, but lacking a hammer and nail, this could not be confirmed.

Good luck. Let those wheels tear up the linoleum.

This is a re-post of 2016. Nothing changes. Dr. office is the same, right down to the prints on the wall, but those are fading into a blue as is often in cheap prints. My next appointment is next month.

One Day More

So, then. We are watching YouTube and finding entertainment, some chuckling. It's a switch from vacuuming and laundry.

Here is one you might enjoy.

YouTube: One Day More
from Les Miserable

We will have beef stew for dinner. It is a break from our usual fare. Did you know that Fridays are "Fried Bologna Fridays". Give it a shot.

Live well, eat well, walk around the block. Read good books, change out of pajamas.

God loves us. He is the One in Charge. Don't forget that. Happy Easter.

Oscars and Esoteric-icity

Yes.
Oscar time is on the horizon, with all its flash and glamour. The red carpet has been vacuumed and shaken out, light bulbs tightened, egos spit-polished, and statuettes lined up.

Enthusiasm here has waned considerably. Thank you, Lord, for DVR and the remote. I will read and my dear one will work on Sudoku until we can speed through the profundity spewing from those more knowledgeable than the rest of the world.

The thing is that it does not matter at all which are the movies many have enjoyed, but the movies that hold the most meaning and assuage the politically correct need.

(Man, I just read the above paragraphs and I AM IMPRESSED with the sentence structure and vocabulary used. This deserves an Oscar.)

Such verbosity is a result of reading this blog, Word Splash with Joanne Faries .  In her blog, Joanne has chosen some excellent quotes from some superb directors:

Samuel Goldwyn, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, and

film critic Pauline Kael.

These talented people clearly state what movies should do.
And, they should know.

Love It or Hate It

Image result for aquaman
DC  Comics 2018
Aquaman is in theaters now!!  Sooo excited. This one is part of the Comic Movies, Critic reviews are ripping it

My preferred movies are ones that hold me, amuse me, have adventure and conflict, that can be resolved with fast cars, guns, big fights and friendship. Like Fast and Furious, every single one have those with humor.

Jumanji has me telling our granddaughters, who are early teens, that Dwayne Johnson : He's so hot. They were shocked at first; now they roll their eyes and say "Oh, Grandma!"

Movie critics absolutely hate many of these movies. Their words they employ describe such as:

absurd, simple, shallow, cloying, pervy, trivial, schmaltz, absurd, silly, cheesy, cliche, vomit, and more utterly insulting words. These movies usually receive C- ratings, or at best B-.

About the meaningful movies, ones that will be up on the Oscar list, movie critics wax euphorically with words that mean something to movie critics:

bleak, unflinching, stellar, hectic, self-actualizing, apocalyptic, cryptic, raw, blatant, repellent, bombastic of society, trivialization, aversion, porn, heartbreaking, tantalizing, sexual abandon, meaningful, smartly engaging, superb, engrossing and more. These movies receive B, B+, or even A.

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada Movie Poster
Five Stars
Some that include above movies are Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, The Master, Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada.

Agree with me or not. When my husband and I go to the movies, we want to be entertained and have a sense of closure, finding characters we can admire or hate.

Another measurement of a good movie: How many times do I go to the restroom? For Aquaman,  I will stay.

For Three Billboards, I headed out to the toilet 2+ times. For The Master, we left after the first 15 minutes. Both received multiple Academy Award nominations.

Aquaman with Jason Momoa
about 40 seconds

The Master with Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix
The Master
About 3 minutes

Why do we go to movies? Why do you go to movies, if you do go?

K is for

K is for…Danny Kaye
Danny Kaye was an amazing actor, dancer, singer, comedian, and a self-less humanitarian.  Born in the 1913 of immigrant Jewish parents, Danny Kaye was a truly self-made man, who happened on entertainment as a career, purely by accident, and of necessity.  That said, learned from Wikipedia, I have to say that Danny Kaye was someone who influenced my life.

I was all of ten years old when I saw “White Christmas” in color at a friend’s house.  Danny Kaye was supposed to be the comic relief to the somber Bing Crosby, but in my view.  Danny Kaye took off with his part and dominated the screen.  At my young age, I didn’t see the sizzling desire between Bing and Rosemary Clooney.  What I saw?  Danny Kaye, with his rubbery face, funny voices, danced without the demands of gravity.  Danny Kaye made me laugh.

Year later, I saw much more of Danny Kaye in different movies.  He was Hans Christian Anderson in one film, then he was a court jester in another.  He had a successful television variety show, which always began with one of his famous tongue twisters:

“git gat gittle-giddle-di-ap, giddle-de-tommy, riddle de biddle-de-roop, da-reep, fa-san, skeedle-de woo-da, fiddle de wada, reep”

Danny Kaye was so versatile as a performer, and even more so in his personal life.  He was involved and interested in learning.  He was an accomplished pilot, an internationally recognized Chinese chef, a regular USO performer, an ambassador for UNICEF, and even an honorary member of the American Medical Board of Surgeons.

The thing I will always remember about Danny Kaye is that at the end of each TV episode, Danny would dance freely around a white sound stage, with each step displaying his joy in life.  He died at the age of 71 following complications of heart surgery and heart attack.
