Secret held

Weeping angel

Every Sunday without fail, Catherine Henner drove twenty-five miles to Hatfield Cemetery.  With a jam jar of garden flowers, Catherine found the headstone marked “Heath” and the stone carved angel.

Placing the flowers at the base, Catherine would pause to pray for this nameless baby buried beneath.  Then Catherine would walk over the grassy graves back to her car.

Catherine had done this for years.

One day, another lady introduced herself as Betty, and asked about her weekly trips, as she herself made Sunday pilgrimages to her mother’s grave and had seen Catherine.  “Is this little one from your family?”

Catherine pondered the question.  “Yes, I guess she is.”  Seeing Betty’s perplexed expression, Catherine explained.

“When my grandmother was dying, she told me about this tiny grave here in Hatfield, of her first-born baby girl who lived only an hour.  She made me promise to visit this grave every Sunday.”

“So sad when a baby dies.  Your Grandmother Heath must have loved this little girl very much.”  Eleanor called after Catherine as she walked away.

Catherine stopped and turned around.  “Heath was her maiden name.  We never knew about this baby she had when she was fourteen, after she was raped by a cousin.” Catherine sighed.  “Yes, it is sad.”

Sorry to take such a dark turn here.  This was something I was told about long ago, about something that happened before I was born.  A mother never forgets her baby, no matter what.

Holding God's Hand

vintage photo of crowded elevator

There were two types of people crammed in an elevator heading to fifth floor: those who smiled, nodding; and those who huffed with condemnation.

Stuffed tightly as a  pickle jar , people were heading to the top where a conference on anger management was being held.

A grandmother holding her grandson Jimmy's hand, was heading to the 4th floor to a book sale.

The huffing group glared at her tattoo of an angel wrapping up her arm. Almost reaching out to touch the angel, Jimmy saw a wing move, just a little. He heard a gasp from the angry group.

In actuality, only a few from that fast ride in the elevator had much joy. Those to the 5th floor were a grouchy group. These going to the 4th floor, were quite happy.

Grandma and Jimmy were meeting with their church group at the book sale. The elevator door opened, letting go a flood of people. Many were not happy.  Grandma held Jimmy's hand, smiling at him as they stepped out. He whispered, "Some people don't know their up from their down."

God were holding my hand, I would be dancing and singing.

Wed.Words: Passion

Angel readings

There were two types of people crammed in an elevator heading to fifth floor: those who smiled, nodding; and those who huffed with condemnation.

Stuffed tightly as in a jar like a jar of pickles, people were heading to the top where a conference on “Passion for Christ” was being held.  A grandmother holding her grandson’s hand was also attending.  The huffing group glared at her tattoo of an angel wrapping up her arm.

In actuality only a few held that passion for Christ, Grandmother being one of them.
