Different
music artists in my formative years are plastered in my memory. Some of
their recordings make me happy, just humming tunes and recalling some
of the lyrics.
Bobby Vee... I always loved Go Away Little Girl.
Bobby Vee died in 2017 at age 73 years, from Alzheimer's.
Sigh. Bobby Vee made many teenage girls sigh. I was too young, had not done much sighing at that time.
The Beatles had their own song, Run for Your Life, Little Girl. I never listened to the lyrics until recently. Creepy. Beatles were stalkers, promised to behead the girl if she left. This song has been declared to be one of 10 worst Beatles songs

Del Shannon was famous with My Little Runaway. The organ riff was unique at the time. My brother had a 45 Vinyl and a record player! We listened to that record over and over.
Where did this Runaway Girl go? Why?

These narcissistic men viewed these girls as objects, didn't they understand that? Obviously,
all girls need to watch themselves and ask serious questions about any
guy who is controlling and possessive. They should consider
cross-country training.
Maybe, it would be better if girls just listened to the lyrics. And, maybe it would be a good idea if the parents listened what is being playing.

When I listen to songs I sang at the top of my lungs as a child, I shudder that my mom ever let the music play around me at all. My kids think I'm stuffy but I never let them listen to the naughties (or I did my best). My oldest told me he'd cut a Napster CD with the explicit lyrics instead of the 'clean version' and play them when he left the house. -_- Of course, the explicit version then was nothng like it is now!!!

DeleteSounds like we could have held our own concert. Singing at the top of my lungs was so freeing. My evil siblings stopped making fun since "Sound of music' did work for them.

ReplyDeleteThis song uses a line from an Elvis song. And lots of groups covered it. All of which I never knew because I seldom listen to the words of songs.

DeleteThese songs were written and sang in a different time, what we know now is different, we are better informed and what we need to do now, is listen to songs like these with our children and explain to them what the lyrics meant and how wrong many of them are.

DeleteYou didn't include Go Away Little Girl by Donnie Osmond. I know it was a little later but... There were so many derogatory songs about girls at the time. In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry is one of my favorite songs but it is absolutely terrible.

ReplyDeleteI love Bobby Vee, but I don't recall ever hearing him do Go Away Little Girl, all though his last big hit, Come Back When You Grow Up, would serve your theme just as well. Norwegian Wood- and about anything else from the Beatles in that period- I just assume they were high and let it go at that.
