Bring them home.

1985 photo taken Stephen McCurry. Search for the green eyed girl led to this woman.

Afghanistan used to be a rugged country "somewhere up there" on the map and that it was vulnerable to Russia's invasions. National Geographic was active in documenting its history, people, and landforms.

Then 9/11 happened, and American troops went to this country, staying there since 2001. Our President has set September 11, 2021, as the date to start the process of demobilizing.

How to come home?  Coming home from a 2 week vacation is hard enough, but coming home after being there?  From the longest war seen in the modern era?

Bring them home.  Bring our soldiers home. Bring them joy, bring them peace. Bring them home.

The YouTubes are from "Les Miserables", a musical about the French revolution. Each is about 3 minutes or so.

  2. ן would say : don't! don't send them to all these places: Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan, Irak where they get stuck for years. USA is not a seriously threatened territory from the outside, so why sacrifice young lives?

  4. Yes, bring them home. I work with two women whose sons served there, and both sons have mental scars. It's tragic. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

    1. I have met too many young men who returned with such pain. My dad was in WW2 and he suffered (as we did, too) for 65 years.

  5. I will never forget the Russian Foreign minister warning our Secretary of State to stay out, you cannot WIN, there nor win them over. Stating the many years USSR tried and failed.

  6. I am glad our soldiers are coming home. My heart hurts for the Afghan people, most especially the women and girls, but this can't go on any more. We have been in Korea for almost 70 years and Germany even longer and where has that gotten us.

Every time I hear that beautiful song, I cry.

  8. I believe Australian troops in Afghanistan are also being brought home, about time too. We've been involved far too long, if the Afghani's haven't sorted themselves out of made progress in 20 years then they probably never will. Our troops and yours, need to come home to some peace and quiet.

  12. Susan, I wanted to tell you that this photo of the young girl is my very favorite photo around. We all have a favorite, and this is mine. I remember seeing her years ago in National Geographic, and then later as she was older. Thank you for sharing these pictures again.
