Black wings gleam against a grey sky--
Murder of Crows
Beating the air, striking the air
Birds meant to stay in trees,
Perching, watching,
Cawing and shrieking,
Diving in, driving out.
Red feathers, red tail flash--
Boil of hawks,
Birds meant for the sky--
Gliding and turning,
Sweeping in wide circles.
Black wings flee.**
Scree…scree…scree
I love to watch the birds. Hawks, eagles, and even turkey vultures are so majestic as they fly. Other birds are graceful and sometimes playful as they fly.
ReplyDeleteOh, so correct. Turkey vultures are one of the ugliest birds going.
DeleteWhile I am fond of (obsessed by) most birds, the corvid family has a place reserved in my heart. They are such intelligent family minded birds, and I do love the way they co-operate.

DeleteThe drawings are fabulous. We rarely see hawks around where I live. We do have crows, but usually only one or two pairs.

DeleteCrows are smart and know there's strength in numbers.
ReplyDeleteIf crows ever banded together to make one large murder of crows, humanity would suffer.
DeleteCrows are vicious. We watched three attack a robin's nest and kill all the babies.

DeleteAgain I am reminded of sights that amazed me. Backpacking the higher mountains it thrilled me to look down on soaring hawks, crows and eagles. It seemed unnatural to be ABOVE the birds that were flying.

Looking down on them! You sure reached some altitude.
DeleteCrows aren't the prettiest but they are quite smart. You never see a crow that has been hit by a car. They are street smart and while they scavenge road kills like the hapless buzzards, they know how to avoid collisions with cars.

DeleteThe thing that pops into my head, it ain't only crows. I've watched groups of much smaller birds run hawks ragged!

DeleteYes we have a raptor living in the firs opposite our top floor flat and the crows mob him. Funnily enough, so do the few seagulls who come this far upriver.

DeleteCrows remind me of my time in Alaska. They used to perch on the branches of birch trees and watch. All of a sudden a bunch of them would take off and fly down our long curvy driveway, screaming all the way. It was fun just watching them.

ReplyDeleteOur ravens do the same,chase the hawks away. We don't have any crows in this area, but the ravens are everywhere.
That seems to be related to heat and food sources.
DeleteI have an aunt into taxidermy. She shines up dead birds, eagles, ducks and the like by using a freezer and hairdryer. I think to rid them of bugs. Acetate shines the feathers up nicely.

DeleteA few years ago I came to a reckoning of sorts with crows (I'd never cared for them much). As soon as I did, and I distinctly remember thinking, 'These are all God's creatures, so they can't be bad. I no longer hate crows,' one came down from the air when I was on a walk and made a harsh nip towards my ear (and I don't have ears that look like food, lol!). I took it back and said I hate crows again, lolol
ReplyDeleteA nip on your ear? Have you ever seen the Hitchcock movie, "The Birds". It will also reinforce hate for crows. Nasty.
