Parents had forced Sam Snail and all his mates to attend the class on snail safety, where posters covered the room:

“It’s not dandruff, you idiot! It’s salt!”

Mr. Goo, the oldest snail in the community, scanned the adolescent snails with his antennae. “Listen up, you slimy slugs!”
The snails convulsed with laughter---the slug joke was an old one.
Then all became quiet as the spectres of snails long gone before filled the room.

Intervals of laughter and silence of doom broke up the rest of the day. Finally, class was dismissed.

ReplyDeleteI thought this tale was a cute one, in spite of the fact that I'm not really a fan of snails (or slugs).
In fact, I've "salted" my share of them on our patio over the years.
(they're not an endangered species).

DeleteWell, none of us can really be assured that we will 'make it home' but the snails do stand a pretty good chance of not making it.

DeleteOnly this morning on an early trip to look at the moon I picked a snail off the path and put him in a safer place. Which happened to be in the neighbours yard.

DeleteRacing snails would be a high-stakes sport.
I don't mind a snail, but I detest slugs. Maybe it comes from stepping on them barefoot on the sidewalk at my old house. Huge, fat, spotted slugs. Yes, they got the salt. I've since read that you can help them die more pleasantly by leaving out a pan of beer. It seems a waste of beer, but preferable to the sizzling sound of the salt.

DeleteI'm not a big fan of snails, often blaming them for anything eaten in my garden, when of course the real culprits are earwigs and caterpillars.
