1968. Take me away.

1. Space Travel - A Trip to the Moon (1902)

1968…was an important year in my life for many years, one of which will make you snicker, hopefully.

One girl in my junior high school English class brought a National Enquirer-like paper to school.  Our circle of girls encircled her as she read aloud:  “UFOs need young women!”  That’s what we are!

Apparently, alien planets desperately needed healthy human teen-age girls/women with which to reproduce, replenishing their depleted planet.  The first requirement?  These breed stock must be healthy, with no flaws. The second requirement?  These healthy perfect females must stand in an open area north of any dwelling at ten a.m. on a certain day.

Did I want to do that?  Heck, yes.  Anything to escape a male-dominated farm life of repeated drudgery! Oh boy howdy.

Flawless?  I was a little weak on the one, being near-sited.  BUT the eye doctor said that this was probably due to the excessive amount of reading I did, and this would clear up when I reached the extent of my growth.

To prepare, I ceased heavy reading and ditched the glasses for a week. The night before the transporting I showered thoroughly, put my hair in rollers (so I would look like Mary Tyler Moore), and slept lightly.

Ten a.m. found me pacing eagerly in the wide open driveway and pasture. Here I am!...Please take me!...I waited over an hour, scanning the clear sky.  Nothing.

Why did I do this??

Escape has already been mentioned.  Another reason was I was darn curious about sex.  In a rural environment, birth control was virtually impossible to obtain, even for an unmarried woman.  Getting pregnant by an aggressive teen age boy would be a certain padlock in farm life.

So…I continued to think Here I am? Until my college years.

Sorry to be so wordy.  That is not like me.

  1. This thing I think is going to let me comment this time and you have gone crazy!!!! Okay or went crazy. My sister wasn't a farm girl but a cow pasture backed up to our house. My cousin tod her that fresh cow manure would remove freckles. So after every one went to bed they got some soft manure and spread it on their face, they had to leave it on 5 hours. but went to sleep and mama woke them up.
She wanted to be taken by aliens the next few days when word got around and the freckles were still there. TRUE.
But I am glad the aliens didn't take you, I would have missed this smile...
I hope this works... It does look different....

    1. I wonder, did any cousin tease her? Manure? no matter how much I want to fly away, I would not touch the manure. We had cows.

  2. Not for me. I didn't like trust the young men around me, and an alien race would have scared the life out of me.

  6. I remember hearing about this alien call for young women and wondering at the time who would be silly enough to believe it and stand outside waiting. And wouldn't their parents be wondering why they were out there just looking at the sky?

    1. My parents didn't say anything. It was a Sat. a.m., they were busy and I often went for walks, so I could disappear for quite a while before anyone noticed.

    1. In the 60s there were sightings of alien saucers. There were all sorts of rumors. I didn't care how silly. I'd be there.

  8. I can't imagine being that bored of my life. Now if it had been a bus for superhero tryouts....

    1. You have no idea. A bus to superhero tryouts? I'd stand out side at least until 2 pm.

  9. Same here. But, being nearly 16, it wasn't so strange. My brothers would buy it for me. They got away with all sorts of stuff.

  10. This is a funny tale. It is amazing what we are willing to believe at that age.

  11. I remember some funny things I did as a teen that I look back on and have to wonder what in the heck I was thinking! Ha! I think we were lucky to live in a time when we could be outdoors and still be home safe by dinner!

  13. Fun story!
Oh, man! I remember being a teenager in 1968! There was a rumor going around that all the virgin teenagers would be taken on such-and-such a night. I trembled in my bed the whole night.
The next day, however, no one could point fingers at those of us who were left because ALL of us were left!
