“Clement,” the Marchioness addressed him. “It has been said that your father has been and is now a magnanimous man.” Hermine stepped in closely to the now shivering man. “You have stolen two possessions of great value from the Marquess of Brocton. How do you propose to make reparations for each?”
Clement staggered with the knowledge that his father the Duke and Gemma’s father the Marquess were going to do some very bad and fully deserved things to him.

This one, the titles, are much above my paygrade, but it is fun to read. I get lost in the old hierarchy.

My oldest daughter participated in the annual "Renaissance Faire" near by. She is an amazing seamstress and her dresses were/are spectacular. No parental-pride here.
DeleteSo she explained the hierarchy of the royals. They were pretty vicious when it came to the manners and rules.
Clement stole both Gemma's heart and her virtue. As a result she is with child. As grandfathers-to-be both fathers would demand that Clement provide generously for the baby. He would have to marry Gemma in order for her honor to be intact. It would also legitimize the baby. Monetary reparations would include support of Gemma even after a divorce and support as well as title would go for the child.

DeleteI suspect that he has stolen Gemma's virginity and her families good name. And marriage is the only reparation. A marriage which I hope Gemma does not regret.

DeleteI created an altered book on the Royals and they were often not just vicious, they were unloyal to their spouses, and often had affairs. They would put their family in prison if it served their purpose, or behead them if that was a better option.
