What an Irish child thinks

Ireland. Ireland, oh you are magnificent.  The country, the green, music, literature, and, most of all, its people are magnificent. 

 

No matter what might be passing in all countries, Irish children have a grasp of language that is peculiar to their country. These ginger haired children have a way of refocusing what is important comparatively.

So, that given, let's all go to the pub, sing some songs, take off pajamas and put on clothes, argue with parents, and above all, be amazed at what a child can do at such a young age.

 

Fickle Words

 

Words linger in silence

Just outside my reach.

Once easily they popped to me,

Now, those damn words will

Scamper and bound away.

Perhaps what scares me most

Is when the words pause in mid sentence,

Leaving my brain 

To scramble through the files there, 

Searching for the right words.

Words, words, words.

Words that sing and shout.

Words that fly about.

Zing, zap, and zoom.

Winging their way with wonder

Denying grasps, causing gasps

Written in 1971, at college during teacher training.

A writer in a hazy world

Is a sad writer.

Cancel the Words from my Mouth, or Else

 "Cancel culture" is a term batted around and was unknown until recent months. What does it mean? 

"There is no single accepted definition of cancel culture, but at its worst, it is about unaccountable groups successfully applying pressure to punish someone for perceived wrong opinions. The victim ends up losing their job or is significantly harmed in some way well beyond the discomfort of merely being disagreed with. Someone like J.K. Rowling isn’t really a victim of cancel culture—she’s too rich to be punished in any meaningful way and she doesn’t have the kind of job that one can be fired from."

New York Times columnist Charles Blow, tweets: “Once more THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS CANCEL CULTURE. There is free speech. You can say and do as pls, and others can choose never to deal this [sic] you, your company or your products EVER again. The rich and powerful are just upset that the masses can now organize their dissent.” The rest of his views can be accessed.

But this cancer has deepened. "The situation has deteriorated to the point that one no longer needs to say anything to be targeted by cancel culture. At Skidmore College in New York State, a professor is being boycotted for merely attending a pro-police “Back the Blue” rally."

Until my hand becomes a working entity, I have been researching, cutting and pasting. So this is an article for you to read.

Singing and songs fill the spirit with a deep emotion. I need music like this. We all need music that lifts our spirits.

'Tis hard to create an ode

When my brain is growing mold.

The meter and rhyme--

I run out of time,

When the meter

Is sweeter

Than the rhyme

Is fine.

The sage, Ogden Nash

Knew when to slash

If the words he had

Smelled rather bad

And what he needed

Was better heeded.

So, Dear Odgen,

To quote such an odd one:

Candy is dandy

But liquor is quicker.

This is mine:

Dark chocolate is divine

When eaten with red wine.
