August, Abandonment

 caves | heritagelandscapecreativity

Mind gone dry,
Mined too many times.

Rocks crumble
From inside the hill.

Nothing left to pick
With a broken tool.

Wind echoes
Through empty caverns,

Taking wisps of ideas
Leaving dry husks

In which

Only a throbbing sound
Is heard.

Abandoned.

Ashes to Ashes

I will read ashes for you, if you ask me.

I will look on the fire and tell you from the gray lashes
And out of the red and black tongues and stripes,
I will tell how fire comes
And how fire runs far as the sea
.
By Carl Sandburg

Fire all throughout the Southwest--it is burning, eating and consuming every single thing in its way.

from a distance
Residents are looking back at the fire, as they drive away with just clothes and photos.

Dry dry air, heavy and suffocating.  Sun scorching burnt earth, 100 degrees or more. Tinder dry vegetation, ready to burn.

Oh, God!  Please protect the firefighters!

Oh, God! Bless families whose homes are burned to the ground!

Every summer, I post about wildfires.  In 2014 , we could see the flames from our house. 1994 at a school where I taught, ashes covered playground and swings. That one was called the Witch Creek Fire

Below are photos I took from our house in 2014.

Fires like these will happen until December. Last year, many wineries near Napa were ruined and burned. It took three months to extinguish that fire.

P.S. This was a re-post updated from 2014.

Wednesday Words...Working for What Is Yours

One drop on wheat corn and dry land

Ben stood up, rubbing his back and grimacing in pain.  He and his sons had been chiseling through rock hard ground, going on eight hours now.

The beauty of the landscape had disappeared long ago, leaving desolate what had once been paradise.  As far as the eye could see lay dry dirt.

He swung the pick-ax again and again, another hour then another.

A flicker of dark earth below appeared and he smiled, digging further.  “Keep digging! Boys, keep digging!” Even yet another impending drought and its arid wind could not eliminate the promise of water below.

The deep crater filled with water, rising slowly. Ben leapt into the air, filling it with loud bellows of laughter. “Boys, we hit water!  We’ll start drilling tomorrow!”

Raising his fist and shaking it to the sky, Ben shouted, “Take that, Jerry Brown!  My land has water, and it’s mine!”

In your face!

well water no power
