We see and hear about Dunkirk, as from the previous post : Just a Few Words. Seeing those young men, saved from absolutely certain death, fills me with pride. They were brave and dedicated to their countries.
The British people stood by them and gave the military all that they had.
One movie, Mrs. Miniver, released in 1942 presents the amazing commitment to these home bound men, women, and children.
A synopsis:
"A moving drama about a middle-class English family learning to cope with war, told in a series of dramatic vignettes. The family, headed by the lovely and gracious matriarch, endures the departure of the father for the beaches at Dunkirk, the discovery of a wounded Nazi pilot, the death of the daughter-in-law in an air raid, and the entry of the son into the Royal Air Force."
The Film that Goebbels Feared :Winston Churchill credited Mrs Miniver with increasing American support for the war effort. A new programme finds out how the domestic drama changed history.
Greer Garson won the Best Actress for her phenomenal performance.
Please watch it. It would be a well spent 2 hours.

DeleteIt's been years since I've seen "Mrs Miniver" but yes, it is a good movie.

DeleteI've never seen this, I tend to avoid movies about the wars. My dad used to watch war movies and was always making remarks about how they were always favouring the Americans as heroes, saying not all the Germans were as bad as the movies made out. Dad was in WW2, but on the German side. I got sick of hearing it all. Then my first husband was a soldier and now I can't stand the khaki colour.

DeleteI can understand how he felt and you as well. Mrs. Miniver was strictly from how the homeland was affected. It is one to watch.
It has been a very long time since I have seen this I did not know that Churchill and others gave it so much credit Maybe I will watch it again soon.

DeleteI caught a few minutes of that not too long ago, on TCM. I would have finished watching, but I was on the way to town at the time. The part I saw was the death of the daughter-in-law in an air raid.

DeleteI have to admit, the only thing I knew about Mrs M was the comment Hawkeye made in MASH about Col. Potter "in this light" looking like Greer Garson in it.

DeleteOk, you did bring a tear. Having 2 brothers and many cousins and uncles there the memories are dear to me. Thank you for reviving a spirit I remember growing up and reading of England. It is amazing they held their own against such a foe.

DeleteDear Susan, mom took me to see this movie when it first came out. I was a little girl but I knew what was happening. Since then, I've borrowed it from the library several times and watched it and always felt what Goebbels feared: The film united the United States with England and kept the British dedicated to saving civilization as they knew it. Thanks for reminding me of it. Peace.
