Are you a
good negotiator?
When you were trying to
get the car keys, did you manage to convince your parent how logical it would
be? To buy a used guitar for $25 instead of $35? To stay out past the curfew time? To buy a used car way under the sticker price?
Did you succeed with other
negotiations?
Here is my 2 ½ year old
grandson:
Benjamin: We need an idea. Let’s…watch TV.
Daddy: No…we need a better idea.
Benjamin: Let’s watch……TV.
Daddy: No.
Benjamin: We need another idea. Let’s watch a movie. On that TV.
To some, the
art of negotiation is inborn; it
comes with the genes.
I like the way Benjamin thinks LOL!

Delete2 and 1/2 and already too aware of that TV. I can't say I was a good negotiator. When my folks said no, they explained why and that was pretty much the end of it.
ReplyDeleteBenjamin is allowed to watch only a certain amount of TV, and his parents stand firm on it.
DeleteThe kid's got a good technique. I still use that method though it probably doesn't work quite the same as it would for a little kid.

The biggest factor are big blue eyes. How are you on that one?
DeleteNo meant no when I was a child. Always. And if repeated meant no... in my room.

Same here: no means no means no...My parents were quite firm on that. And so were we.

I can pretty much negotiate myself into or out of anything LOL.

DeleteKids usually win. They know how to wear you down.
ReplyDeleteHe won't and didn't win. His parents decided when they were 25 that they would be perfect parents. Now they are 34, and are learning a lot.

DeleteMy kids negotiate much better than I ever did. Come to think of it, I never negotiated. Parents said, I did. We were raised not to question and there's a reason for that, which I understood even then.
ReplyDeleteGenerally it was almost impossible to negotiate with my parents. The answer was no before the question was even posed.
DeleteHe is one sharp kid, but good for his parents for sticking to their guns. I negotiate if I feel there's a chance for persuasion, but if I sense resistance, I will (rebelliously) quit trying. I had a dad who could be swayed, but not a mom.
