Cardboard Town
Where the bounced are trounced,
The in-flamed are out-flamed.
Variety of rich to poor,
Poor to beyond poor.
Raspberry, Blackberry,
Gangrene black
Creep and seep
Down and up,
up and down.
All in Cardboard Town.

This is a re-post from June 2014, using underlined words as a writing prompt. The words were provided by Delores at Mumblings, who threw out some words and invited bloggers to use them. The "Wednesday Words" challenge is still happening! Go to either of these sites: Elephant's Child and River - to see what words are being used this week.
My heart breaks when I see this. How could it be?
ReplyDeleteit happens too often. In Tijuana, which is about 40 miles away, many cardboard box "towns" exist,.
DeleteWell the cat would like cardboard town, sucks people actually have to live such a way
ReplyDeleteCats do enjoy the boxes while humans--not so much.
DeletePoor takes on a whole new meaning
ReplyDeleteSo many needs in such a place.
DeleteVery nice post. Sometimes I forget how much suffering there is around the world. The news blasts so much negativity, I tend to drown it all out. It's posts like this that bring me back a little bit, help remind me that suffering like this is really out there even though I don't see it day-to-day in my semi-suburban bubble.
ReplyDeleteI think everyone closes their eyes and block out the horror of these lives. I know I do.
DeleteOh Susan. This reminds me of something I had carefully pushed to the back of my mind. Years back, going past a cardboard city in India I watched a woman carefully sweep the floor of her cardboard castle with a home-made dustpan and brush (pan another sheet of cardboard, and brush carefully bundled leaves). And her house proud ways hurt my heart. She had so little, and was proud of it and cherished it.
ReplyDeleteOh Sue! I push my memories of the poverty of Tijuana, Mexico, where a cardboard town is at the far edge of an already poor down.
DeleteThis is really sad. I read in the paper a group of doctors and lawyers had to make a cardboard town with the crash of the ecnonomy. Between rise of insurance and less money, there were left with very little.
ReplyDeleteWhen the educated elite are forced there, what needs to happen? Change needs to happen, and not the kind we were promised.
DeleteI like this a lot! It's so very descriptive of the way some people are forced to live, often through no fault of their own.
ReplyDeleteThe top image brings back memories, we moved house once when our youngest had just learned to crawl and as we emptied each large box we opened the other end and laid them along the grass like a tunnel for all the kids to crawl through and generally have a great time for about a week until they disintegrated one night when it rained.
Since we live in So Calif, we see these towns out in the "sage brush" areas, as well as in poorer parts of town.
DeleteFlorida's got quite a few of those. Some in the public parks. It's gut-wrenching there, worse for those up north (or in another cold state).
ReplyDeleteThere are so many empty out of business big stores. They would be ideal shelters with some $$ and work to create individual space. $$ is the real issue.
