Helicopters fly
Gray and Green
Against blue sky
Whoom-puh, Whoompuh
Blades cut through air
Shake leaves
Rattle glass
People watch from below.
Fly at night
Fly in day
Going where? When?
Today, tomorrow.
Young men, young women
Sons and daughters all
Fly across
Desert ground, look down.
Whoom-puh, Whoompuh
Beating of their hearts
And
Beating of blades:
Same sound.
That cut a sharp picture in my mind.
ReplyDeleteVery moving poem!
ReplyDeleteGreat rhythm and imagery :)
ReplyDeleteYou are a wonderful writer Susan. I know I may have said that before, but I so enjoy your posts.
ReplyDeleteDelores, Jennie, Siv Maria, and Arleen--Thank you so much for feeling the helicopters that fly over us from Camp Pendleton. There are so many military families we meet and know. When we hear the 'copters fly, we picture these people. And pray for them.
ReplyDeleteOh, thank you for sharing! Love the feeling/sensation you created. I'm sandwiched between the Air Force Academy and Fort Carson, so I'm quite familiar with the sound and feel of the heli's overhead.
ReplyDeleteBeing near so many military installations, we see these young people shopping in the stores, pushing baby strollers. When I see and hear the heli's overhead, I think of those people.
DeleteThis makes me think of the old song by Police 'Do the Russians Love their chidren too'. I grieve for the losses on all sides.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Death of young is grieved, no matter what nation or belief. We aren't the only ones in the sky.
DeleteThe whoom-puh, whoompuh was a great addition, really helped the flow of your verse, great job.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pat!
DeleteThis would make the MOST BEAUTIFUL picture book! I love it!
ReplyDeleteI wonder if we could gather all the "Small Stones" posts? Put them into a book? What would happen?
DeleteDear Susan.
