When I was young

Pinterest | Proverbs, Proverbs 20, Old couples

When someone refers to me as “old person” I am offended.

I look awesome for someone who is called “Old Person”.  Whenever I see myself in the mirror, I say “Damn, girl. You still look like you are 40.” Why not? I don’t have glasses on when I look in that mirror, and fuzziness wipes out the wrinkles.

My hair has a strip of white at the roots, but Jennifer at JC Hair Studio has magic hands. My own hands look old, I’ll give you that.  When my daughter and her two daughters placed their hands in a circle around mine, you can see where my hands started out and where there are now.

I am now 1/2 inch shorter. That plus one sweet gr-daughter is about 5 inches taller than I am, heightens the effect.

Over the years, I have avoided telling my weight: Traumatic  ridicule from my brothers and my father.  (I wrote a letter to my mother, asking for her help. She did nothing.)

Telling my age no longer fits in that list.  So I proclaim:  I am on Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, and just had my 72 birthday.

Now I ask you to view my daughter and myself.  It was taken Summer of 2021. Erin is 48 now, born in 1975.

No photo description available.

Age comes and there is no stopping it. I will take off my glasses.

Snow is a Thief

Fallen leaves covering a patch of ground

“Today is a good day!”

That phrase escaped Helen’s lips as a sigh.  Helen could remember what happened all that day:  breakfast, how good the oatmeal tasted;   and, even the joke her nurse Alice made about Helen’s thick curly white hair.

“Why, you have more hair on your head than I had when I was only twenty!”  They both had laughed.  It was true; even at the age of eighty, Helen had fluffy thick hair that looked like a cloud, a mound of snow.

‘It’s my birthday!  Today!’  The thought occurred to Helen as she moved to the window.  ‘My daughter Maude is coming in a while and she will bring my favorite cake.’  Helen even remembered the phone call she had received from Maude just minutes ago.  ‘It’s my birthday!’

Alice walked to Helen’s side and took her elbow.  “Would you like to sit on the deck, Helen?  It’s a rare lovely day, and Lord knows, we won’t have many more of those when winter moves in on us!”

“Oh, Alice!  I would love that.  Maude will be here shortly, and I want her to see me sitting outside.  To see me enjoying the last leaves.” Helen’s brown eyes sparkled at the thought of Maude coming and finding that today Helen remembered her oldest child.

Alice escorted Helen to the outdoor chairs.  Helen was still vigorous, strong, and often argued with Alice about all the ‘fussing over me—I am not a child, you know…’  Alice spread a pale pink lap quilt over Helen, and told her that Maude would love to see this quilt being used.

The woods before her were filled with leaf-covered paths.  The last golden leafs reminded her of a “yellow brick road” from that movie.  ‘What was it?  Oh, the “Wizard of Oz”…’  Her eyes followed the paths and the bare branches arched over the yellow leaf paths.

Helen used to gather up those leaves into bouquets and give them to her mother, “A last bouquet ‘fore the snows, Mama!”

An idea sparked in her tired brain, and she acted on it.  “A bouquet!  That’s what I’ll have when Maude comes!  She will be so surprised!”

Her feet moved down the steps and onto the paths, the pale pink quilt slipping to the deck.

Helen was sure she knew this path, from somewhere.  ‘Oh, yes!  This is the path I always take when I walk.  Oh, of course.  Mama wants me to get some flowers for the table at dinner.’

Helen walked forward into the fog of the days behind her, into the fog coming over her mind.

Hands filled with leaves, Helen sat down on an old fallen log and looked around her.  She was so tired.  Letting herself slide down the side of the log, Helen curled up against it, and laid her head onto the rough bark. ‘I’ll rest here for just a moment.  Mama will be cross if I’m late.’

Snow started falling slowly at first and then built up speed.  Soon the paths, branches, fallen trees, and an old woman with fluffy white hair were covered in a layer that made the world white.

The voices calling ‘Helen!’  went unanswered.  As the day moved into night and the snow grew from a few inches to a solid foot, the voices turned to sobs.

On the table in Helen’s room sat a pink birthday cake.  Maude knew that Helen like the color pink.

P.S..  This story is based on a true event.  My father's cousin developed Alzheimer's in her later years, and left her caretaker's house in Michigan. She was found when the snows melted, not too far from her house.

We will be visiting our son and family. They are in Illinois and we are in California.  So far away! But I will be putting up previous posts from the early years.  Please, please leave comments. May 1 - 8.

Driving in French Valley, California, four-year old Clara looked up at the sky, seeing hot air balloons floating over her.

Happy Birthday, Robert

Robert Peck, 1951 - 1997

All my life, my family has called me "Sis".  Now that there are only three of us, hearing "Sis" comes less and less frequently. That fact pulls out stories  about a few of those times.

My brother Robert was born January 14, 1951.  Then about eleven months later, I was born on December 4, 1951.  We were inseparable, sometimes enemies and sometimes friends.  But, always always we were ready to be there for the other.

Robert was able to talk me into cook or bake a treat for him.  How, I don't know.  "Sis...let's make some..."  only he did not do the work.

He convinced me to make deep-fried onion rings on Sunday afternoon. My hair smelled like onions even when we went to church at night.  Had to shampoo several times to remove that odor.  Then he thought frying up some bologna sounded good and I made that for him.

But, Robert's favorites were anything sweet.  Again, he would say, "Sis...let's make some..." I would sigh, but there would quickly be some dessert of any type.

Here are some of his favorites, taken from Mom's cook book given to her as a wedding present in 1946. The binding is gone, pages fragile and crumbling. Lots of splatters and wear speak volumes.

God bless Betty Crocker.
She taught many war brides how to cook.

Sis. How I would love to hear Robert say "Sis...let's make some..." again.  I probably would mix up hundreds of batches, just for him.

Robert is holding his son Tony. Robert was a big man, and Tony is now.

Robert is on the left. His vision was so bad, and no one knew it until he was 2 or 3. I am on the right in a red gingham dress. Mom is holding me, I don't know how she survived. My father is the handsome dark man. His family were from the Iroquois tribes; he and his brother had features and skin color from that.

Joy to the World

We never see snow at all, so this was such a treat. We left the next day, for LAX California
The year I was born: 1951.
The day was: 4th

And on December 4, 2016, I turned 65 (sixty-five, yup).

It was the best birthday of my life.  Our son John married Arlette Foy, and we rejoiced in a big way.  Chicago sparkled all on its own.

This was a truly joyous day, just can't tell you how much.

Today is my 67th birthday. I look good, a few wrinkles or more, surrounded by those whom I love, my husband of 46 years, and a field of happiness around us.

We are blessed.

Thank you, God.

Blow Out Candles

vladimir putin birthday
source
October 7th was Vladimir Putin's 65th birthday and many wishes of health and happiness to him. May God gift him with all that he deserves.

May God gift him, indeed, since Putin is a man with a variety of interesting qualities.

Patriarch Krill of the Russian Orthodox church endorsed Putin's election.  He stated that Putin's terms were a "miracle of God" during the election of 2012.  Since collapse of USSR and lifted oppression of faithful believers, Patriarch Krill has joined an alliance with state.

The Church even supported Putin's decision to move into Crimea and Ukraine.

Putin is apparently a believer with his religious awakening occurring after serious life-threatening event in his personal life in 1990s. In his early years, his mother had baptized him secretly when a baby and took him to services (held in secret).

His mother gave him his baptismal cross before a trip to Israel, and asked him to have it blessed.  "I did as she said and then put the cross around my neck.  I have never taken it off since."

Happy trails
Putin's confessor (according to rumors) is Russian Orthodox Bishop Tikhoshevkunov.

Putin is also actively involved in protection of rare species as Chairman of Russian Geographical Society Board of Trustees.

Forget about Syria!

Forget about Crimea and Ukraine!

Forget about Iran and his support of their nuclear program!

Greeting Iran's leader
Forget about his past as head of the KGB!
KGB leader
Forget about all his choices! He wears a crucifix and has Russian Orthodox Church support after all!

Yes, may God show him the Christian way, whether or not he follows.  May God grant him deserved fruits of his labor. May God provide Putin with an appropriate reward for his many many works.

If Vladimir Putin lived in USA, he would now qualify for Medicare.

Happy Birthday!

HomeTown Buffet
It's a happening place!
Another birthday, another year, Donna June sighed, as her husband talked about yesterday’s football game. “Oh, boy, sweetie!” He had said.  “We’ll go out for dinner!

For Big Jim, dinner could only mean Home Town Buffet with cheap bountiful food, seconds and thirds, no questions asked.  He handed her his keys with a big guffaw as he paid.  “These pants won’t fit after eating tonight!  It’s rib night.”
Ryan's, HomeTown Buffet and Old Country Buffet Get Grilling: Now Blue Ribbon Baby Back Ribs Offered Every Night
It's Rib Night!

As quickly as a pig racing to the feed trough, Big Jim was in the line with Dave from work, laughing.  As she wandered around the salad station, she realized that Dave had a huge butt.  In fact, each buttock was the size of a Halloween pumpkin.  Big Jim was nearly the same, perhaps each buttock the size of Easter ham.

She placed the salad plate on the table and wrote a short sweet note to Big Jim. “You can hitch a ride from Dave…” Donna June walked to the truck and revved it up. A movie was playing, one that Big Jim had ridiculed as “…some dumb love story…you know I hate those…”

Well, Jim, we all hate something…

Betty's Birthday

source

It was nearly dusk when Betty stepped into the mudroom.  Through the kitchen door, she heard her parents’ arguing.

“Today is her birthday, dammit!” her mother exclaimed.  “I forgot all about it!”

Her father shouted, “It’s not my fault she was born.  I didn’t want another….”

“Stop it, right now!” her mother growled back.  “Yes, it was inconvenient to have another child so close to Bob.  I know that!  But that doesn’t change the fact that she is ours, she is here, and today is her birthday.”

“What’ll you give her, then?” her father responded. “Take one of her Christmas presents like we do every year?”

Betty backed away from the door and silently returned to the now dark snowy landscape.  Each year she was hopeful her birthday would be remembered and celebrated.  Each year she was disappointed.

Turning away from the house, Betty stepped in her father’s steps over deep snowy ground, and returned to the cave she had dug in a deep drift.  She would stay there until her parents could at least pretend to be happy.  She didn’t want to embarrass them by walking in too soon after their argument.

I’ll just wait here for a while…she thought as she dozed off to sleep in her hidden winter cave.
