When the Door Opens

Yalehome door hardware
The unexpected can hit at the turn of a door knob. You are working at home and all is going well. Papers, reports and whatever. All was going well until the door knob turns.

So, here you go, following the family of Professor Robert Kelly, BBC correspondent from South Korea.

Suddenly Dr. Kelly is a viral superstar. But is he the star? Or will sweet Megan Marian Kelly achieve the role of Ruler of the World?

Who knows what will be next? Will it be another turn of the doorknob? Will it be a tizzy tantrum outside the office door?

How about the family dog barking loudly? Needs a walk? Who would walk the dog while taking the children to the park?

Maybe it would be Mom chasing after two screaming children? And one of those children is vomiting? Who will clean up the vomit? And, how about changing diapers?

The truth is that work is work, no matter where. If it were an invasion of a 4 year old or an invasion of fellow workers, work is always work. It just has more possibilities, which is a darn good thing.

The real super star is Mom, as we all know very well.

Disappointment is a Harsh Burden

Disappointment is a harsh burden, especially when there was great expectation.  Any fan of mysteries can understand this sentiment.

I remember the Agatha Christie books and how my white-haired grandmother would devour them.  Devour them!  Then those books came to me, and I became a Christie fan.

In 1985 or so, BBC released the Agatha Christie Mysteries starring Joan Hickson.  She was an amazing Miss Marple, perfect to the letter.  The excellent filming, settings that screamed “England!  Right here!”, as well as the accuracy of clothing and times presented all the engaging drama one has come to expect from BBC mysteries.

Let’s leave Dame Margaret Rutherford out of this, shall we.

Today’s American murder/drama/police dramas have gone down a dark, predictable road.  My heart is broken.

It is a dead give-away who did what the moment actors start appearing.  Excluding the usual main characters, the “bad guy” will be the once-off actor who is the most famous and gets paid the most.

And the plot?  The instigating event occurs by the 14th minute.  The searching for clues lasts until the 47th minute.  The big “Ah HA!” hits around the 52nd minute, with winding down (through commercials) until the 58th minute.  Then there are ads and previews of the next episode.

Disappointment, indeed.  Agatha Christie would have wept.

Last Year...The 2012 Olympics

Did you see this? I didn't. Source

Last year I missed the London 2012 Olympics.  All of it, if you don't count the BBC commentators giving their summary of the day's events.

My sweet grandson Benjamin was 6 weeks old then (Have I ever mentioned him?) and I was in Switzerland for almost three weeks during the Olympic time.  The balance of the day was spent with the new parents and their new baby.

But, when twilight came, I took the #10 bus back to an apartment my daughter had arranged for me.  (Why didn't you just stay there?  At their house?)  Their own apartment was the size of a kitchen drawer and I might have had to throw up a tent on their tiny balcony.

When I finally settled down for some Swiss-German TV, the choices were limited and so was my understanding.  It wasn't until I returned to my own home, after the flame had been extinguished and the flags carried out of the stadium.

This video with Mr. Bean/Rowan Atkinson was all I needed to see anyway.
