Every October, the blog world is bedazzled by posts with
autumn photos taken by the blogger her/himself.
It makes me hunger for and a little bit jealous of the world “back where”
there is such a thing as autumn.
Here in Wildfire season in California, the fall colors
don’t exist, except for a sweet gum tree that also sheds little spike balls. What I do have are photos taken in late October
2009 on a walk with my brother, Don. The
photos taken were put into an album to give as a Christmas present for my mother who was
in fading and failing health.
So, here are some memories of Autumn and a small town, Pleasant Hill in Illinois in 2009:
An old house next to the bank
Mom's neighbor. Mom could tell me who they are, who their parents were...
Small rental apartments next to the train track. This
used to be a veterinarian office when I was young.
A house near the local funeral home
After my father retired from farming, he visited with at the John Deere
store almost every day. Sometimes he drove to another John Deere store to pick
up parts. These was pre-computer ordering.
The Methodist Church (which is in the sidebar). Young couples
would meet on benches (out of sight) and talk/kiss.
This log house was saved and then moved to this site. It dates back to 1820
and across from Stark Nursery, where the first Delicious apples were
created by someone who brought up a "scion" from Kentucky which
was grafted and cross-pollinated.
This house was restored and is now occupied by some very hard working
people whom my mom knew. Yes, she could cite their lineage. We
stopped and peeked in the windows while it was still
under construction. Mom had no shame, and was friendly with everyone, who
also knew her lineage.
Somewhere this road will come to an end, in Calhoun County

These are truly autumn pictures. They feel so good.
ReplyDeleteOne can almost smell fall in the air.
DeleteGreat memories. Let them roll!
ReplyDeleteExactly. Let them roll.
DeleteWe don't get those fall colors here either. Too far south. And that you are in California is a double bummer.
ReplyDeleteThere are colors up in the mountains which are lovely. then it snows.
DeleteOh, those spike balls. I know them well.
ReplyDeleteSpike balls are awful. When they were lining the glass, I take my class out to pick them up.
DeleteWonderful photos and memories, Susan. Thanks so much for sharing with all of us today. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteMidWestern people who moved to other places long for autumn.
DeleteEnjoyed the post. Pics of course were very good.
ReplyDeleteSending love from this side....
good to see your name, Hope you are enjoying fall in your part of our country.
DeleteJoyful memories, and yet a little bittersweet. I'm glad you got to go, and hope you still visit with family, even if it's not there.
ReplyDeleteIt is sad to think about the Maple trees that surrounded our house. They each fell or was cut down so those leaves are not there.
DeleteI love autumn....and feel that I am cheated in Florida - we only have a tree here, or there that exhibits any color....and that usually isn't until January! Thanks for sharing fall!
ReplyDeleteWe can go to the mountains, about 90 miles away, where the leaves are changing.
DeleteI love this post and both of the log cabins, I always wanted a log cabin, like these not the big fancy 3000 square foot mansions log homes. what a great idea, to make the photo album. I made a 16 x 20 picture frame and put cutouts of photos in a collage.. Hung it on his wall at the home so he could see the family, it has him mom, dad, 1 sister, 5 brothers, his two kids, their families. it is now hanging in my spare room and has since 2006
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I have so many photos that I would like to share.
