His folks had forced Sam
Snail to attend the class on snail safety, where posters covered the room:
“An Informed Snail is a Safe Snail!”
“It’s
not dandruff, you idiot! It’s
salt!”
| Source: Wikipedia |
“A stupid snail becomes escargot!”
| Mr. Goo |
Mr. Goo, the oldest snail
in the community, scanned the adolescent snails with his antennae. “Listen up, you slimy slugs!”
The snails convulsed with laughter---the
slug joke was an old one. Then all became quiet as the spectres of snails long gone before filled the room.
They whispered, “Grass is
good. Sidewalks are bad….”
Then Mr. Goo shouted, “If
you are ever besieged by a
bunch of birds, then kiss your shells good-bye.”
Intervals
of laughter and silence of doom broke up the rest of the day. Finally, class was dismissed.

Mr. Goo watched them in silence, Poor dumb Molluscan Gastropods! Half of them won’t even make it
home.

They do stand a better chance of survival than plain slugs though.
ReplyDeleteI have seen too many shells to believe that these gastropods survive long.
Deletethis is priceless....what a great job
ReplyDeleteGlad you provided these words. everything came from escargot.
Deletelol have to watch out for the birds. Grass is good until the lawnmower comes along
ReplyDeleteLawnmower is the enemy of many in the world of grass dwellers.
DeletePoor snails can never win
ReplyDelete'tis true, fortunately.
DeleteIn reading your comments, now I will be ever aware when running the lawnmower that I am putting little things at risk. Some things just can't be helped. ;)
ReplyDeleteIn the snail world, the life span is very short, so the lawnmower must be factored into the dangers...
DeleteMr Goo is a sadly prophetic name for a teacher of young gastropods...
ReplyDeleteIt seemed appropriate.
DeleteEscargot makes me think of an old joke to which the punchline is, "Look at that S car go."
ReplyDeleteThat is great! Thanks for a new joke (to me)!
DeleteGreat fun! This is one of my favorite exercises.
ReplyDeleteDelores' words allow me to play, improvise. Glad you enjoyed it.
DeleteThanks for the smile.
ReplyDeleteSmiles are for what the story hopes.
DeleteI love that snail race photo!
ReplyDeleteCan you believe that there are actual snail races?! Bets taken, winners declared...
DeleteGlad you let your creative juices run wild with this one, Susan! I never realized how dangerous it was to be a snail. This would make a great children's book! Very clever story with fun images!
ReplyDeleteJulie
It would be a good children book, wouldn't it. It would certainly make stomping on a snail take on a whole new look.
DeleteThis was/is very, very different! I like it.
ReplyDeleteI'm picturing a snail slowly crossing a road while his Spanish friend says, es car! go!
Yes! Or, "Run! Run for your life, Sam!"
DeleteDelightful treatment of Wednesday's words! Escargot is one of my favorite nouns even though it leaves a mucous trail across the page. Quite palatable though with the appropriate wine. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteThat dang mucous!
DeleteMy name is William from USA and am really happy to testify about this
