Forty-eight people are confirmed dead. An estimated 228 are missing. Recovery teams and dogs are finding more, most of them in pieces and bone fragments.
California is dry with a strong Santa Ana winds and high temperatures. The fire is considered to be 30% contained.

ReplyDeleteOnly when we see this, Californians take out lawns and plant fire resistant succulents and rocks. Fire dept. recommends planting 20 ft. from the house.

DeleteMy best friend’s niece lost all her possessions and pets in Paradise, but she and her children made it out with only with the clothes on their backs. No home and no job but they are alive. Others weren’t so fortunate. The scenes of these fires are beyond tragic. How are you doing, Susan?
ReplyDeleteWe are far away. Fires are in N. Calif. and we are in the south. We had horrible fires two months ago, decimated so much land. No houses though. Thanks for asking.

DeleteOh no. We have similar disasters here in summer. It's just devastating, but we don't often lose a lot of lives, most fire-prone areas here have solid evacuation plans and people leave.

Our winter rains are usually in Jan. We did not have much last winter.
DeleteThe evacuation plan here was inadequate. Fire funneled cars and then burned those inside.

DeletePeople build their homes in canyons surrounded by mountains and highly flammable brush. Nat'l forest mgmt needed to do preventative burning.
These fires have been so devastating and catastrophic to so many CA residents. It's really sad. My wife's daughter and her family had to evacuate and stay with us for a few days, but fortunately their home was kept safe and now they've returned. I'm sure they'll be dealing with some bad air quality and ugly fire scarred hillsides for some days to come, but at least they are safe.

DeleteMy heart hurts for all those people. As one woman said, she lost her history in destroyed heirlooms,letters and photos. The Red Cross is my go to place to send money. They helped me a lot one time when I was hit by a flood.

DeleteOh, those victims have suffered so much and now have to suffer again as they try to recover.

No, I am S. Calif., but was near the Idyllwild fire. It is upsetting to see pink grey smoke on the horizon.
DeleteNational Guard has joined the search for missing people. Other states send their own wild fire fighters. There is a closeness that they share. Good people.
Note: 59 people are now confirmed dead. DNA experts are searching through bone, any that have enough tissue to test.
DeleteThe # of fatality is now 63. # of missing is now 631 (acc. to CBS reports.) In a shelter, 21 people are showing symptoms of Norovirus.

DeleteI have been following this on NBC. Horrendous tragedy. I am not sure how long it will take for the community to recover. I heard one bit of news about a week ago that San Francisco probably had the worst air quality in the world at that time, thanks to the fire and smoke. I hope the situation has improved.
