Who Let the Dogs Out, version 3

Countries all over the world have iconic structures, plants, and even animals. India has the Taj Mahal and sacred cows.  Ireland has Hill of Tara (and lots of other places), along with shamrocks (sham-rogue).
Bern, Switzerland, also has its own icons that stand out. This past summer was exceptional in representing: St. Bernards.  These are truly immense dogs made famous for rescuing people trapped in snow.  The brandy cask is wishful thinking, not accurate.

During our visit to our daughter, we discovered an astounding number of St. Bernard artistic statues all over the city.  We bounded around trying to find new statues, photos in all of 20 massive dogs.

Each monument was given a name.  My favorite was "Timmy", the cheetah above. Not so much for the cheetah paint, but for the name. Every Timmy I have known has been a boy, like in the show "Lassie".

We thought we had done so well with our twenty sightings, but we soon found out that there were one-hundred and twenty all over the city. They were even on roofs. 


  











This live St. Bernard was with his owner who was showing and explaining more about this magnificent creature along old town streets.


What more can I say? You had to be there.

    Sadly the first six photos refused to load. 120 St Bernard statues would have been incredible to see.

      Great family dogs, apparently. they are known to be loving and protective. Need lots of room inside and out.

    They really love their dogs! I love St Bernard's too, but I think I'd be dwarfed by one.

      The largest dog was 210 lbs. and 3 feet long in body. Cost of owning such a dog is overwhelming.

      I wonder why I am having such a time with my pics?

      According to an Irish dictionary, shamrocks in Gaelic in: Sham rogue. I hope that is correct!

      Aha. It's 'seamrog' (with a fada over the 'o'. So your spelling was phonetic. It sounds like the English except the 'o' is long (the fada over it does that, but I don't know where to find a fada on my keybpoard!)

    That would be fun to try and find as many as you could. I like that they have unique paint. Those are cool pics to put in the family photo album. :)

    As a complete aside, and I thought you'd get a chuckle (though I'm getting a headache, hahaha), I took the teaching advice of 'no talking' with every class but one (last period). I was tired, and new...and that rule just kind of fizzled out for that last class, and I was a little more lenient. To this very day they are the only class I have that gets noisy (and boy, can they get noisy). Lesson learned for sure, and you are a very smart lady. Glad I heeded for the others, BOY am I. :)

      Have you ever read "Miss Nelson is Missing"? I had a 4th gr. class in which I was the 18th sub. tried to be lenient, gentle. big mistake. So I did the Miss Nelson thing. Came to class in black, dressed up, heavy make-up, and eyes that could cut glass. No leniency there. They toed the line after that.

      I am so thrilled that you are learning and enjoying teaching! Crack the whip, lady! It'll work.

    Awesome. I love big dogs. Apparently, St. Bs are a great small apartment breed. There are loads of them in Manhattan, of all places. I can't imagine they leave much room for furniture.

    That is disappointing about the brandy...

    St. Bernard dogs are gorgeous and oh-so-sweet. When I was in college a million years ago, there was a St. B named Max who hung around on campus. He wandered into the buildings, sat in on classes, and everybody loved him to pieces. He was like our unofficial mascot. (Much more impressive than a terrapin!)

    Our son and his family had an even BIGGER dog...an English mastiff. OY! Her feet looked like they belonged on a bear.
