Different music artists in my formative years are plastered in my memory. Some of their recordings make me happy, just humming tunes and recalling some of the lyrics.
Bobby Vee... I always loved Go Away Little Girl.
Bobby Vee died in 2017 at age 73 years, from Alzheimer's.
Sigh. Bobby Vee made many teenage girls sigh.
The Beatles had their own song, Run for Your Life, Little Girl. I never listened to the lyrics until recently. Creepy.
Run fast, Little Girl.
Del Shannon was famous with My Little Runaway. The organ riff was famous at the time.
Where did this Runaway Girl go? Why?
So, there you have it.
Bobby Vee wanted a girl to go away before he begged her to stay.
Beatles were stalkers, promised to behead the girl if she left.
Del Shannon wondered why his girl ran away.
These narcissistic men viewed these girls as objects, didn't they understand that?
Obviously, all girls need to watch themselves and ask serious questions about any guy who is controlling and possessive. They should consider cross-country training.
Truly nasty misogyny concealed under a veneer of popular culture. Scary isn't it?

DeleteIt's amazing to me that the words of all those songs, from when I was decades younger, pop right into my head, verbatim, at the slightest trigger and yet I couldn't tell you what I ate for dinner last Monday. I hate when ads adopt one of 'my' songs and beat it to death in the mname of advertising. But my latest music addiction is Leonard Cohen,. He (or his ghost - R.I.P.) could Dance Me to the End of Love any day of the week!

DeleteBack in those days, it was a common theme and nobody, well almost nobody, questioned the lyrics or meanings. Things are different now that we are all more aware and teaching our children to be aware also.

DeleteObjectification was kind of the norm with both sexes back in the sixties and before. Just watching old movies it's easy to see. I think we still see it though in different ways.
ReplyDelete"Run for Your Life" was probably my least favorite song from Rubber Soul though not for any message in the lyrics--honestly, I didn't even pay much attention to lyrics for the most part. This album is still one of my favorites by the Beatles.

DeleteFor the Beatles, a lot of the early John songs especially were angry, jealous love songs. In hindsight, it's a bit surprising that the king of all hippies was the last of the four to lose his rough, Liverpool, blue collar edges. Fortunately, Rubber Soul ultimately marks the turning point to the gentler, happier John. "In My Life" is, by any reasonable standard, one of the most profound love songs anyone has ever written.

DeleteDear Susan, I suspect girls today are almost as vulnerable because we all so want to be loved and sometimes girls see possessiveness, even abuse, as a sign of real love. It's tragic. Remember that song "Looking for Love in all the wrong places"? I wonder what it had to say about love. Peace.

DeleteHearing these guys on the radio sparks memories of the past, I cant say I recognise Del Shannon or Tommy Vee tbh. The Beatles made an impression and I was more a rock n roll Elvis fan, besides the King is alive - according to the sightings.

So sad about Bobby Vee.
You know in so many instances when I was younger, I was more focused on the beat than the words. As in the case of the Beatles song. I always liked it, thinking in terms of he was just going to break up with her, but I listened much more closely tonight. Yikes! And back in the day, we never really equated possessive with obsessive.
