Sunken Lane |
Along paths of crusty walls
and tangled brambles
Will time be soon left behind?
A path once of stones and dirt
Now displayed a row
Of weeds, all now green and grown.
His footsteps had walked in mud,
Racing and laughing
Youth and friends hooting beside.
From his home, peat smoke once rose,
Fragrant over tall trees,
Brown bread baked on warm stone hearth.
Home now stones, long gone, hearth cold,
Gray rocks on his feet
Reminded him that green never leaves.
Nor will he.
Just images from my mind as summer fades makes me long for green.
You make me wish to be there.
ReplyDeleteYou and I both want to be there. Maybe summer 2020?
DeleteYou lead me visually through someone’s life, from childhood to old age, I was mentally writing the story, a feeling of Seamus Heaney.
ReplyDeleteGood poet, I enjoyed his writing.
DeleteI love the imagery that you have created. I also love the picture that you posted. I would love to walk there.
ReplyDeleteI would as well. Can almost take in that green nature scent.
DeleteMemories are always with us.
ReplyDeleteThat is a really cool photo. Fun path to walk unless there's a thunderstorm.
Well, rain is always part of Ireland.
DeleteNice for a changing of the seasons.
ReplyDeleteThat green and the changing of seasons are incredible.
DeleteHow I would love to walk that path - at any time of the year.
ReplyDeleteSame here. Muddy or now, I would wander.
DeleteI love the picture, and the scenario you have created. But the ex-science-teacher in me screams FLASH FLOOD!
ReplyDeleteChuckling here!
DeleteThe photo you shared is gorgeous. I can imagine walking that same path. I was also impressed by the visual images you created with your incredible words.
ReplyDeleteWalking that path and picturing an old man revisiting it was so strong in my mind.
DeleteFascinating place, interesting lighting during the day surrounded by trees but completely different at night I reckon. Perfect movie setting.
ReplyDeleteClicking the site under the photo will tell you more. At night would be different.
DeleteSummer is fading, Susan, but it will return, along with its green, as it always has. Let's hope we are all here to enjoy it. A good friend of mine died last week and he will never see the green again.
ReplyDeleteToo many friends of our age are leaving the green as well.
DeleteI have seen this when hiking the Appalachian Trail, mysterious and haunting.
ReplyDeleteI had an 8th greade teacher, Mrs Grill in a small mountain school, FINALLY get me to appreciate poetry.
I like this.
Sherry & jack (Sherry just headed for bed.) LOL
You would be ideal to explore writing poetry. You have had so many explorations about which to write!
DeleteThings change, but the human heart still has the same longings.
ReplyDeleteI know that at this age we are now looking at our gr-kids and hoping that we will see them become adults. But that means we will be walking down that lane ourselves.
DeleteGreat poem. That's a fantastic photo. Is it genuine or did you use a special lens to make that effect?
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
I found it on Wikipedia and the site address is under the photo. It is amazing.
DeleteI don't want summer to fade either.... Love your poem and that tunnel, I need to dig one for my yard. :)
ReplyDeleteTeresa
As a child, my siblings and I tried to tunnel to China.
DeleteHi Susan - I'd love to walk that path and imagine the legionnaires who'd walked before, the animals that used it at night ... the many different peoples who travelled along ... so many stories.
ReplyDeleteLoved the poem - so right for the image - cheers Hilary
Thanks, Hilary. The people and history that walked before is always amazing.
DeleteWow that picture just draws me in and I really want to follow that trail. Your words remind us that our seasons can be both daunting and refreshing.
ReplyDeleteIt seems that one season forward to the next.
DeleteThat's a pretty neat photo
ReplyDeleteIsn't it though!
DeleteA walk full of memories!
ReplyDeleteSuch green and the scent of rain!
DeleteThat was so cool!
ReplyDeleteWalking tree lined tunnels like this one is amazing.
DeleteThe was beautifully written. They go well with the picture and make me want to go on a little adventure down the path.
ReplyDeleteHead out and take the adventure.
DeleteSusan, this is a wonderful poem. It is so beautifully illustrated and your words are magical and so very evocative of the season.
ReplyDeleteWalking along places like this is magical.
Deleteseems like a greenhole that will give me exit to my dreamworld :)
ReplyDeleteSame here.
DeleteThe image of the sunken lane is really quite wonderful.
ReplyDeleteI hit "publish" too quickly. I should also have said that your poem captures it beautifully.
