Aroma and taste |
Theobromine* is basically in both coffee and chocolate. It has something to do with taming the alkaloids. Note the two differences in the molecular formula.

Theobromides in Chocolate |
Chocolate= C7 H8 N4 O2 Caffeine= C8 H10 N4 O2
Chocolate and Caffeine are close cousins, if not siblings. God created both. Both came from the New World. God meant for man to consume them. Go out now! Buy some.
Now, for some tea, a gift from the Far East.

How to make a perfect cup of English tea |
Note for tea drinkers: the molecular formula is much more complicated, as it contains so many variations, with unique and delightful stuff in it. All the variations make no sense to me either.
*Go to this site. It is about a 13 year student in England who worked this out.
The only caffeine I get is when I break down and have chocolate. I gave up soda 35 years ago and have never had a drink of coffee. Hot chocolate when it's cold cold cold. Otherwise water water water.
ReplyDeleteOkay, water is fine.
DeleteI'm not a coffee person and most of the time drink caffeine free tea, not because of the caffeine but I'm a "light" (read that as "wimpy/weak" tea drinker. Chocolate I can usually take or leave; it's not a quest but if I start it can be a binge and I'm not even that fond of it! But HOT CHOCOLATE! Be still my heart! And caffeinated cola (Tab) -- more for the taste than the caffeine, but I'm sure it has an effect. The whole chemical thing is beyond me!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping over at my place the other day. I'm behind in visits!
Hot chocolate is also a food of the gods.
DeleteI am a coffee lover but I'm a lover more of chocolates. Of what the heck. I want them all. LOL Hot chocolate, cold chocolate whatever chocolate I can get. Maybe that's the reason I'm over weight. Oh well, you can't take them when your gone. The chemical thing wasn't my thing in school. Enjoy your Wednesday Susan. See ya.
ReplyDeleteCruiin Paul
I have my chocolate and I am drinking my coffee.
DeleteI don't believe this stuff for a minute (LOL). I am just gonna stick my head back in the sand, forget chocolate and have another cup of coffee. Sherry says she will take the extra chocolate I don't take. (SMILE)
ReplyDeleteBut, but I did enjoy the read and it is interesting as I enjoy my coffee!
PS: THe English kid is just trying to start something. Striving to prove tea drinkers are more complicated than coffee hounds. LOL Smart alec younguns!
From Florida with love
Sherry & jack
Take your head out of the sand!
DeletePS: I meant to say, thanks for the education, Teach!
ReplyDelete;-)
This has always been claimed, and now we know.
DeleteI'm a tea drinker, can't stand coffee but wouldn't say no to most types of chocolate!
ReplyDeleteNo one should ignore this food of the gods.
DeleteWhat a relief to see you, too, are unfamiliar with those numbers/elements! (Whew!) I'm an unashamed coffee addict, but chocolate really doesn't tempt me. Weird.
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to confirm that the % are so close. MMMM
DeleteI don't drink coffee. It tastes bitter and oily to me. I do drink tea. Of course I love chocolate the darker the better.
ReplyDeleteDark chocolate, mmm. I have to avoid the high percentage of the blessed stuff.
DeleteI like chocolate but I'm not crazy about tea and I can't stand coffee. Does that blow the equation?
ReplyDeleteNo, you're okay. Poor guy.
DeleteCaffeine does not agree with me, but chocolate... Mmmm, chocolate...
ReplyDeleteI never really looked at the molecules before. Cool.
I like dark chocolate in small quantities.
DeleteI am a humble devotee of Ixcacao, Mayan Goddess of Chocolate, and take communion with her as often as possible.
ReplyDeleteA Mexican friend brought flakes of cocoa to make into hot chocolate. Break of a bit of the cocao into hot milk and whisk briskly. It was delicious. within an hour of less, a migraine hit me hard. Good stuff, but not for me.
DeleteWell, the littlest differences in molecules can make substances completely different. It's so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteScience can be inflexibly correct.
DeleteSome of the best things in life are chocolate.
ReplyDeleteI had to give up coffee, and drink my tea weak. I am told it is like dishwater, but accept this assessment while wondering how they know. I have not yet brewed myself a cup of dishwater.
Bad idea.
DeleteI take none of the above. I guess I'm the free radical or whatever they call such things lol
ReplyDeleteHm. Maybe you head over to the wine to drink with the chocolate? I did that once: red wine and dark chocolate. I threw up for hours and had the worst migraine.
DeleteElemental, dear Watson. Tea is all Ho Ho Ho Ho Ho.
ReplyDeleteI guess it could be.
DeleteYou have such a wry sense of humor.
DeleteChocolate and coffee. Are they not on everyone’s essential food guide? Can we live without them?
ReplyDeleteEXACTLY! It deserves to have its own part of the food pyramid.
DeleteMy understanding is that caffeine comes in three types, and the type in coffee is what can give the jitters. The type in chocolate cannot, and tea it depends on whether you are susceptible to that type, which i am not. Thus i can only have one cup of regular coffee a day without a caffeine induced panic attack, but i can have as much tea and chocolate as i want with no ill effects.
ReplyDeleteCaffeine in coffee is the magic people love. Chocolate has some, unless its dark chocolate, and oh boy howdy, it hits hard.
DeleteGotta have my 44 oz Diet Coke every day! I always think I can quit cold turkey, but why would I? My body disagrees. If I can't have my magical elixir, I get a two-day headache. I don't think I've ever had chocolate withdrawal, though.
ReplyDeleteChocolate is a required part of life. Right?
DeleteI drink a couple cups of coffee per day, but have never had any interest in chocolate. I always figured that i lacked some enzyme or something that made it so appealing to everyone else.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is for the best? Cups of caffeine? Man.
DeleteI can read it, but I think it means more than it calling me a HO
ReplyDeleteSurely not. I like to think the molecular set up would never call us that.
Delete...I'll have my chocolate straight up please!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes. I did that in Switzerland and it did not go well.
DeleteWell, after having nothing of worth to say on the last two blogs I visited (my fault, I assure you), I can actually say something coherent here: I never knew how closely caffeine and chocolate were chemically! I see a lot of Ho Ho Ho in tea, and Santa can have mine 'cause I can't abide the stuff. And now, off I pop for a Pepsi Zero Sugar which should by now be cold enough...
ReplyDeleteAs long as you chomp on a bar of quality chocolate (which is not Hersheys).
DeleteVery tasty. Can I have more please?
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Eat away, Oliver!
DeleteInteresting. We enjoy all three at our house.
ReplyDeleteYes!!
DeleteA very timely post, I have just finished a cup of coffee and two squares of chocolate. I prefer herbal tea when I drink tea, but that is rare, I'm a coffee drinker.
ReplyDeleteGo for it! I have to meter out how much chocolate I eat.
DeleteSusan:
ReplyDeleteI can honestly say that in our home, I love all three (have certain preferences when it comes to tea as well).
Never met ANY chocolate I didn't like.
Been a coffee drinker for ages, too.
(like that Hazelnut creamer).
Wifey's not into coffee (more for me...lol)
As for the chemical aspect to all these items?
Well, I flunked Chemistry in high school spectacularly (could not balance those dumb equations to save my life).
I'll stick to what I like and what tastes great.
Very good post.
Stay safe.
Thanks! I like the sugar free Italian Sweet Cream and French Vanilla.
DeleteFor tea, I like Earl Grey. The bergamot oil, I think.
I'll drink (C10 H12 O5 Ca N2 Na2 2H2O) to that!
ReplyDeleteWrite molecular formula do you prefer? Earl Grey? English Breakfast?!
Deleteout of coffee beans right now and pacing! Always drank tea growing up, still have a cut each day but I'm a coffee junkie now. Chocolate IS its own food group! Newest Favorite is Ghirardelli's Peppermint Bark.....swoon.
ReplyDeletePacing indeed! I know your pain.
Delete...Cup!
ReplyDeleteI'm a teacher; knowing what someone meant is fine!
DeleteDrinking my coffee right now and after reading this, I'm heading to the cabinet for chocolate:)
ReplyDeleteJust saying or thinking the word chocolate is enough!
ReplyDeleteI love coffee and add chocolate and I'm in heaven. The perfect combination in my opinion. :)
ReplyDeleteFor me as well. Bring it on.
DeleteI only drink decaff coffee, and prefer candies to chocolate. And never drink tea. Does this make me unusual? :D
ReplyDeleteNope, not at all!
DeleteI am a tea drinker but I love chocolate.
ReplyDeleteTea with anything is always good!
DeleteI'm a tea drinker …
ReplyDeleteI do occasionally enjoy a coffee, and have to admit a square of dark chocolate goes well with it … we like the 85%
All the best Jan
Oooh, yes! I had some problems with the 85%, sadly. Migraines.
DeleteHi Susan :) You speak my language!! :) I love coffee, had to give up caffeinated last year though, it really made a difference in lowering my generalized anxiety! I still drink decaf and I crave that bevvie every morning! You know how I feel about sugar in general, I LOVE chocolate!!! :) You can keep the white chocolate though! ;) For some reason, tea gives me heartburn. I thought for a while it was the tea bags, so we switched to unbleached then to tea leaves...same deal. Herbal I'm okay with. But I'll stick to the decaf! Oh and some hot chocolate! :)
ReplyDeleteAnd you speak mine! Decaf is my requirement too. oh well.
