Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl may not be known by many adults outside a child’s world. Oh, they might recognize movies that came from his books: James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda, BFG, The Witches, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Danny and the Champion of the World, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and … But the adults may not know anything about the BOOK.

In looking through Wikipedia, I scanned through 500 entries, including books, short stories, and movies. Eventually, I had to stop. My eyes were blurred.

Roald Dahl was prolific and creativity poured from him, a fountain that children enjoyed for decades. My kids. My students.

So, Alex Cavanaugh and Heather Gardener asked for bloggers to choose a book that was loved and its conversion to film or music media.

My choice is The BFG, a book beloved by children and parents.  I won’t give the synopsis because I really want you Bloggers to check it out.  A tender story with courage and love, the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) gives the reader hope and humor.

As too often, movies made from great books are often trash, as they are slashed, removing essential story lines. I won’t list those movies as they shouldn’t be watched by anyone with any sort of discerning taste.

So, here is The BFG. Hopefully, you will be able to read the excerpt.

The movie is one rare one that actually steps up and stands side by side with the book.

Both of these are about 2 minutes or so.

Reminder to movie directors: Don't screw with the message of the book.  The book is just fine as it is.

  1. My kids a;ll loved his books. Hadn't heard about the film. But it's on my want-to-see list now!

    1. The character whose voice and appearance is Sir David Mark Rylance Waters. Awesome actor.

  2. We have seen the movie and it was awesome. I didn't realize it was a book. I may pick up a copy for a Christmas gift to my son. :)

    1. So happy to hear that your son is such a reader! He will love the book.

  3. Our kids loved the movie. They never read the book, since they all jumped reading levels really fast, but it's one I'll have to pull out with my two youngests.

    1. I am certain they will enjoy it. Your other kids sound like they enjoy books. Glad to hear this will be a love as they grow.

  4. I saw the preview for this film on another DVD I watched recently. My wife and I tend not to watch children's movies and my wife doesn't seem especially interested in them even though see's a kindergarten teacher. I guess she'd rather escape from kids when she comes home.

I like the quote at the beginning. It's so true. It's kind of along the lines of the Bible verse that reminds us to think on good things.

    1. Yes, the quote says so much with a Biblical message. Hope you watch the dvd, and hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Merry Christmas, Lee, and enjoy your gr-kids!
