Adam Ruins Facebook

A rant is long overdue, so bear with me.

Internet security has always been an issue, and this issue becomes blaring when it affects millions of people worldwide.  This is not just about Equinax as one of many hacking invasions.

My daughter recently introduced me to "Adam Ruins...", a YouTube series where an incredible revelations about a variety of a broad scary vulnerabilities in today's societies. (While "Adam Ruins..." may or may not totally truthful, this one certainly must be.)

Here is one scary video that is applicable to my rant:

This is 6:20 in time, but well worth the watch.

For instance, I searched some sites to find a dress or something for my son's wedding.  Since then I have been inundated on Gmail, Blogspot and Facebook sidebars for outfits that may be of interest. Motorcycle parts? NextMD for migraines? IQ tests? (I am brilliant, a genius, by the way.)

Basically we live in a world where privacy is a rare, or even non-existent luxury. Even "going off the grid" is still not a guarantee.

Not much of a rant, but this is certainly one of outrage, anger, and most of all: fear.

I hope that this is accessible!  If not, paste "Adam ruins + YouTube" in your search.

  1. Still glad I'm not on Facebook. Although they get my information a thousand other ways.

    1. Another thing that scares me is 3D Google Maps. One can type in any address and arrive at that place. I "visited" my deceased mother's house, which belongs to someone else. Could drive up and down the street, look at each place, see cars in driveways.

  2. Staying well clear of Facebook/Pinterest/Twitter and all the other sites but still...I'm sure they get enough information from my amazon searches etc.

  4. It's been bad for awhile, but is def. becoming worse. If I visit any site for any reason, I get e-mails and ads about it for days. Recently, I Googled something and a list of my BILLS came up. My private bills that I'd paid recently (cable, car payment, electric, etc.). I was blown away.

  8. Privacy is such a rare thing these days. I have plenty of it here in my home, but once I turn on the computer with all the advertisements and unwanted emails asking me to buy, buy, buy, I might as well be sitting naked in a city street.
IQ tests? No thanks. I know I'm not smart, no need to know just exactly how unsmart.

    1. In the 50s and 60s, we had 2 TV channels, a radio station, one weekly county paper, no ads in mail, no credit cards, and little that connected us to big world. Mom obtained her local info from beauty parlor, at our small grocery store, and listening in at our rural phone party line.
Now 5 decades later, all info is ready and available.

  9. I have been staying away from FB for the most part lately, for so many reasons. I find I am in a better mood when I don't use it! But I have noticed this same thing and it seems to be getting worse and worse. No matter what I search or buy I get ads related to it immediately. It's creepy to say the least.

I'd never heard of the Adam Ruins series but I'm going to check it out. Even if it's upsetting it's still better to be aware of what's going on.

    1. Basically, I de-friended everyone but family. Keeping that allows me to talk with them, hear their woes, see family photos, etc. But, it is too late.

  10. "Internet' and "privacy" are certainly antonyms. But with the arrival of Facebook, letter writing (even by email) has become a lost art. So many people choose to use the WWW that my choice is to use the Net or lose contact with people. Not a great choice.
    I'm busy reconsidering my options.
